  • How did Hawaiian Air get the 717s to Hawaii?

I always wondered this. I see the manufacturer's specs give the plane baaaaarely enough fuel to get here from CA.

I sort of remembering reading a long time ago they temporary add fuel tanks for the trip. But then again when they do fly such distances they are not carrying passengers and/or cargo.

I would think that when giving flight distances, it would be rated with a full cargo. Flying with no passengers or cargo would probably increase it's range somewhat.
Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

They use internal fuel bladders mounted in the cabin. You can see pics from Hawaiian air (scroll down about halfway on the page)

Having auxiliary fuel tanks installed in cabin is how most smaller, non ETOPS planes make it to Hawaii and other destinations afar. Hawaii is a crossroads for many delivery flights to Asia and down under. See HNL Rare Birds Blog. They have plenty of pictures of planes (as well as info) coming through Honolulu.
