I hit 'help', it drops a short list that includes 'about windows', hit that and there is nothing concerning IE, no 'about IE' available in the drop.
helen sez this was one way, what's another?

      1) On the menu bar that says "Help" does that bar displays the following options:

      Code:
File Edit View Favorites Tools Help
Aside from saying 6.0 or #6 what else does it say when you do Help --> About Internet Explorer?

      2) Another way to check program versions is to do this:

Click on the Windows Start button, find the option labeled "Control Panel" and then find the option labeled "Programs and Features". This will give you a list of the programs that are installed on your computer.

However upon checking on this on a Windows 7 system and Windows Vista system neither of them reports the version of Internet Explorer it is currently running (Windows XP Professional did report the Internet Explorer version in its list of installed software).

thats because you don't have Internet Explorer OPEN. You are looking at the Windows help button. OPEN IE first, then use the help key - it will definitely show you what version of IE you have installed.

It looks like you may have WINDOWS 6 OPERATING SYSTEM on your computer. and that is waaaaayyyy old!

When I hit the IE icon it just opens another new page without - File Edit View Favorites Tools Help

Do I need to do all this http://www.wikihow.com/Open-Internet...n-Your-Desktop or is there an (much) easier way to get the right one?

Ron, just go to your list of Programs - you should see Internet Explorer on there. Just open the program that way. if you still can't open the program, you may need some serious upgrades to whatever computer you are using (unless its a public computer like at the library). Good Luck!

The problem here is not the Internet Explorer icon sitting on your desktop, the problem is that the Menu Bar toolbar is not enabled on your Internet Explorer. To enable that, you will need to run Internet Explorer, right click over an existing toolbar in Internet Explorer and make sure the Menu Bar toolbar is checked. Also check to see that Lock the Toolbars is not checked when you try to enable the Menu Bar.

I'm always running IE, there is no tool bar, I probably deleted it.

Ron, when you run Internet Explorer on your computer is there a box where you enter web addresses?

So there are no toolbars at all on your Internet Explorer application?

If so what you can do is this. Press F11 to toggle the full screen mode (you might be already in full screen mode if there is no place for you to enter a web address). If this makes matters worse you might have to press F11 again to toggle the full screen mode.

Yes, I have the back/forward buttons, the address space, the refresh, and the escape. Under that row I have - add to faves bar, get more add ons. That's it. I don't use toolbars and was told they can harbor bad stuff.

Ana, please forgive my curtness in my last reply. My computer ignorance doesn't leave much room for anything, like being polite, when getting twisted up trying to get stuff done. It's spring cleaning time on the ol' HP today and I'm getting my butt kicked.

In this case the Menu Bar is part of Internet Explorer. You need to enable it in order to get the Help option available so that you can see what version of Internet Explorer you have.

Is this how I do that?
                          1. Close all open Internet Explorer and Windows Explorer windows.
                          2. Click Start, and then click Run.
                          3. In the Open box, type regedit, and then click OK.
                          4. Locate and then click the following registry subkey: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar
                          5. Use one or both of the following steps, as appropriate for your situation:
                            • For Windows Explorer: In the details pane, locate the Explorer subkey, and then open it. In the details pane, locate the ITBarLayout value. Right-click this value, and then click Delete.
                            • For Internet Explorer: In the details pane, locate the WebBrowser subkey, and then open it. In the details pane, locate the ITBarLayout value. Right-click this value, and then click Delete.
                          6. On the File menu, click Exit to exit Registry Editor.

                            No.

In the area that has Add to Favorites, Get More Add-ons, right click in that area and see what toolbars are available to you. The Menu Bar should be at the top of that list. If it does exist just click on it to enable it.
