  • R.I.P. Bobby Acoba

Bobby Acoba was a bartender around town for a long long time, and he worked everywhere. When I first met him he served me a number of drink at Boyds, the bar that ran half the length of the old Alexander Young Hotel on Bishop St. (now Bishop Square). That's the hotel which had the coffee shop on the corner of Hotel and Bishop where Da Mayor Frank Fasi used to hold court every morning for breakfast.

Bobby later worked at Aaron's (Nickolas Nickolas), at Sorrentos, and at the Honolulu Club when I worked there. He was a good bar manager and one helluva magician. When business was slow or he had help behind the bar he'd do magic tricks which invariably brought more customers up to watch (and drink).

According to the obituary he did a lot of charity work with his magic.

He was a good guy; the world needs more of them.
