  • Woman lights tap water on fire, thanks to natural gas drilling

Firewater, indeed. I saw a natural gas commercial, not too long ago, where they were talking about how safe and clean their technology is. I suppose it's true, as long as companies aren't tempted to cut corners.

Many water supplies in northern Pennsylvania have long contained detectable levels of methane, because of poorly constructed water wells and the unusual geologic features here. But the contamination in Ms. Vargson's existing well is among the first cases that state regulators have attributed to natural-gas drilling
(and yes, technically the water itself isn't being lit on fire)

Haha. I wonder if Battle Star Gallactica stole "fracking" from the mining industry, or vice versa.

There is lots and lots of natural methane trapped in the frozen permafrost around the Earth. As the permafrost melts, the methane is released... and it's melting.
Can actually light the methane gas on fire directly on the ice!

There are recorded cases of massive oceanic methane fireballs that have engulfed ships, and a lake in (maybe) the Ukraine did it and wiped out an entire town with the vapors. Nothing new.

At Camp Lejeune, however, the Marines lost more than a million gallons of gasoline and petro-products like benzene into the drinking water wells, with subsequent cancers and birth defects in huge clusters.

Almost as soon as press reports came out about water poisoned by fracking, the gas fracking industry began the nice homey We Need The Gas ads to reassure the public. Its one of those things that, if they can do safely, should be done. But if it ends up poisoning the water supply for New York City for example it is not such a hot idea. It fits their philosophy--why should people get subsidized socialist water for under what the market would charge? Why should the public be able to drink water out of their taps for a fraction of the cost of bottled water sold by a good solid capitalist company? Isn't it outrageous that taxpayers are called on to pay good money to purify public drinking water and deliver it in socialist pipes, and then take away the effluent in socialist sewers? Big business is being crushed by the unGodly tax burdens, we need to privatize water systems, everybody knows private industry always does everything cheaper and better, so if the public drinking water goes poisonous, who cares--better they should be drinking privately produced water anyway.

Re: Woman lights tap water on fire, thanks to natural gas drilling

I'm not sure if the Super Fund is being used to pay for taking care of these issues but if it is, the perpetrator will be required to pay back that amount that was funded by this Government mandated fund.

The real issue is that energy companies are market-driven so yes they are at fault for these infractions, however we as a society are equally to blame for demanding the need for these sources of energy at a cheap price. If we want safe, clean energy, then we cannot complain about rising energy costs and must pay the brunt of tapping into the more expensive, safer energy sources.

Yes there is corporate greed where shareholders demand larger return on investments, but without them, there wouldn't be investment dollars to fund the search, research and development of future energy needs. Its difficult to base future R&D budgets soley on market demands. There's a fine balance between return on investments and safe, clean energy for the masses.

That's the irony of capitalism. Unfortunately look at most socialist countries that aren't mandated by market demands. They are the most polluted and environmentally destroyed countries on Earth. China is a glaring example of that.

It is expected that water will be the next great shortage. At the same time, there are powerful interests trkying to privatize it. Where they have succeeded they have obliterated whole national economies; Argentina. Poisoning supplies of public water fits very nicely into forcing people to buy privately supplied water. i believe in Hawai'i there is considerable dissatisfaction with water distribution in some areas where private owners have control over natural supplies. If gas can be brought up without poisoning water, go for it, but otherwise having unpoisoned drinking water trumps the need for gas. At least it should in any rational system.
