Good luck on that. Hawaii has been attempting subtle attempts on that (such as favoring residents for city jobs) and all have been struck down by the courts. It's a small matter of the U.S. Constitution.

Even if you were successful, I suspect you'll find your birth rate will out strip your ability to accommodate them and remain economically self-sufficient.

Support small business entrepreneurship without a lot of regulations. That's the only way to increase job employment, not through outsourced corporations like Monsanto.

Again, not sure how having your own county will help on that front as I suspect most regulation is state and federal level.

FYI, like my father (May he rest in peace), I do not believe in welfare, though I am willing to pay for it in tax for the less fortunate, should I also find myself in that situation in the future.

I find that admirable.

I've heard it said that Molokai is THE highest when it comes to welfare. If true, I'm sure that factoid will eventually come to national attention. The outcome is not likely to be favorable to the residents. Thus, I'd suggest it wise to work on ways to solve that situation your way before TPTB try to fix it their way.

That's what I'm hearing. I know there was one article in the SB that indicated one person came over from the mainland to lead the Honolulu Occupy.

It really makes me wonder who/what's behind this.

You're not gonna turn the clock back, get used to sharing the islands and enjoy the power Oahu has sent off-island for decades, or enjoy your torchlight.
And who gives a fuck who else is on the street level trying/hoping to make things better even if they aren't some prefered race or make a dent?

Today as I walked on Beretania Street on the mauka side of Thomas Square there was a terrible stench stretching the entire block. Before crossing Victoria Strret and after passing the Occupy site the odor was gone. The city should use a high pressure system and clean the entire sidewalk and ground area up to the wall, and be diligent and remove those tents from the sidewalk. The tents were all unoccupied and there were only two people sitting on the sofa. I can't figure out why they are still there.

That area is historic for stench, and it continues as the corroding underground lines reach the ocean. Try going to the Ward Warehouse/Makee St. area and it's really bad, it's a rotting alge smell. The City spent zillions repairing lines near the AofA/Thomas Square years ago due to complaints, and I know it's returned since.

Honestly that smell has been there since before any "occupy" situation started.
Along Beretania it comes and goes, stronger in places. Another strong spot is from Auntie Pastos to HPD.

Well, if the source of the stench isn't coming from the OCCUPY encampment, then it leads to the logical question: Why in the world are those squatters staying in an area where the smell is particularly bad? Aren't there a thousand other places they could "occupy" where the conditions are more tolerable?

There might be more than a grain of truth to what D'Alani is thinking, since the last people to notice a particular odor is when they themselves are the source.

More importantly, no one has answered D'Alani's question: Why are they still there? It's totally pointless.

There probably is some stink from the 'occupyers', many are homeless and using the movement as an excuse to hog up public space as they've been focused on lately and constantly moved. Too many are their own worst enemy and drag down the movement with junk actions. And why they'd pick that stinky area confuses me as well!

I went to Occupy Honolulu in late December to say hi and to play them some christmas music. No stench, and more than half were local locals. Spoke with a lovely, intelligent local girl who seemed to be in charge. Did the same in Los Angeles at city hall. Same thing, but with waaaaay more participants & supporters. I still honk & shaka every time I pass the hnl camp.
