  • Rod Tam gets two days in jail

This kind of decision explains why the Occupy Wall Street movement was formed.

There are two forms of justice in the United States: one for the 99% and one for the 1%. The 1% don't have to be rich to qualify for that designation, just well-connected.

Well, it is his lucky day that he did not fail to pay for a $5 sandwich at Safeway, or he might have been in real trouble. Swift justice comes to the average citizen.

Safeway told Honolulu police Tuesday that it won't press charges against Marcin and Nicole Leszczynski, company spokeswoman Susan Houghton told The Associated Press. The couple was arrested last week when Nicole, who is 30 weeks pregnant, ate a sandwich while shopping and walked out without paying.Their daughter Zofia was taken away by state Child Welfare Services officials. She was returned to her parents 18 hours later.
    Tam, meanwhile:
"Wada said technically, Tam could have been sentenced to as much as 23 years behind bars. A misdemeanor carries a maximum penalty of one year in jail and a $2,000 fine. Petty misdemeanors are punishable by up to 30 days in jail and a $1,000 fine. In November Tam pled guilty to 26 counts of theft and falsifying government records after wracking up about $15,000 in lunch and dinner overcharges to his City Council discretionary spending account. Then in June, Tam entered a plea of no contest to eight counts of falsely reporting the use of campaign cash and failing to report campaign donations."

Two sets of standards: one for the 'haves,' and another for the 'have-nots.'
