I had the joy and honor of sharing the stage with him on several occasions, and even brought him to a friend's surprise party and kanikapila back in 2005.

As a friend put it: "Anyone that records their first CD at age 96 should be a continual inspiration to us!"

He was an amazingly energetic man, and I will long hear his voice in my head, telling tales of tours and past performances - as well as his little "asides" during "Little Grass Shack."

NYTimes does an obit in the 12/12/11 edition (here's a link, though you may be blocked by a paywall if you visit their site often) ---

A few years back both Tapia and the equally/maybe even more incredible Tau Moe shared billing at the Hawaii Theater, and encored the evening as an ancient history duet. I had front row/center balcony seats and copped me a decent bootleg of it all too
