From what I understand, part of it is speculation - so failure to drill for the oil we have means there's less oil down the road and speculation pushes up the price now. Has Obama opened up the off shore drilling he shut down in the wake of BP?

Are we not the world's largest exporter of crude? Yes, we are. We don't need more drilling or Canadian pipelines.

Perhaps the diversion is to cover something else. Gas prices is just what came to mind.

Unfortunately, while gas prices have been(and were) at an all time high, all the while the industry recording record profits, things will never go back to the days of "cheap" gas. They know they can charge it, and people pay it, regardless of if it's coming from overseas, or our own back yard. It's all a crock.

It's all supply and demand. We have no choice but to pay or go without. But the more supply there is, the lower the prices.

Usually supply and demand will determine a market price structure
but this is not always the case.
The DeBeers diamond cartel had vast amounts of diamonds but
purposely choked supply to drive up prices.
This monopoly was challenged by the discovery of diamonds
in Russia. DeBeers has a very able intelligence service and created some
interesting scenarios to foster their monopoly.
