Truly a star in the firmament of musical talent.
Lester Flatt and Earl can be heard in the opening music
    of the Beverly Hillbillys.
That style of music shows how the Banjo can sing
just as clearly as a Stradavarius violin when in the right hands.

I found out about Earl's dying yesterday via the Bluegrass Hawaii mailing list. My love for the genre is well-documented on HT, and Earl was part of my more recent explorations.

This video link was sent in the email announcing his death. Pretty dang cool.

Nice link, Scriv! And here at this link is their 1948 recording of Foggy Mountain Breakdown. 64 years ago and it still sizzles.
I'm sure Earl will be honored this coming Sunday night on TV.
The Academy of Country Music awards show airs this coming Sunday on CBS. The awards themselves will be interesting, but the live performances are almost always HOT!!!

I'll still think of him everytime I listen to "Car Talk" on NPR.

Is he the one who said, "Hey, this guy's good." about his own banjo playing?

What a wonderful link. Thanks for sharing that. I saw Earl and the Revue a few times I feel so blessed. Of course he was the inspiration for Bela' Fleck.
