  • The Early Gilligans Island

    This show is really cheerful.
The intro to the series is the footage of the "Minnow"
    leaving the harbor.
The early pilot was not shown on the air.

    Re: The Early Gilligans Island

So I would gather that the "early Gilligan's Island" would be all of the black & white episodes that aired during the first season in 1964.

After that they started airing the episodes in color from 1965 to 1967. Later incarnations of the series showed up as reunion movies and offshoot projects.

I should have said the Monochrome first season.
The history of Coconut Island is an interesting romp through the past.
Thats the island seen in the opening of all the episodes.
The original 14 acres were expanded to 28,
and the island was soon a place where heads of state and powerful
      businessmen unwound.
One of the last partial owners was probably involved in the massive
      problems of ice in Hawaii.

MM , that's very detailed and highly entertaining link.
Just a few frames after the "Minnow" goes around to the left
there are a few frames with a flagpole with a flag at halfmast.
The wrap for the pilot was on nov 22 63.
A lot of actors and actresses changed as the final cast were selected.
As much footage as possible was recycled, as production costs were high even then.

How much did it cost in baggage fees for a three hour tour?

Depends on if the weather starts getting rough, and you have to survive for 3 whacky years. But it does seem the Howell's went prepared for the long haul. If it ever happens to you, be sure to have a professor, Mary Ann, a movie star aboard, and kill the Gilligan straight off!

I can't remember how Mr.Howell became rich. Was he just from old money from the way he talks? He didn't lose half his money because he still had a same age wife.

It's possible that Mr. Howell was one of the Bell and Howell original founders.
                    East Coast blueblood.
A closer look at the early episodes of "Dark Shadows" reveals layer upon layer
                    of allegory and metaphor.
The bell might refer to an old helicopter factory.

He was shown as owning several large corporations under the Howell Industries umbrella. When asked what happened to him during the Great Depression, his wife says that he was a billionaire, lost most of his money and "became just a millionaire." Among his assets were a diamond mine, a coconut plantation, a railroad, an oil well, and 40,000 acres in Colorado—which included all of downtown Denver—that he bequeathed to his fellow castaways in his will. He also owned the Hatchet-Cuckoo Oil Company, in Dust Bowl, Oklahoma.

I do remember in one episode that Mr. Howell owned the company that made the batteries on which the castaway's radio ran on. While the batteries was depleted in that episode, the Professor managed to recharge them via bamboo constructed doohickey powered by Gilligan's feet.

As far as the unaired pilot it is available in the Season 1 DVD collection of Gilligan's Island. Beside the changes in the cast of Mary Ann, Ginger and the Professor, the Minnow set sail from a port in Florida instead of Hawaii. I suppose if they kept that original locale they wouldn't have stories of a Japanese sailor who thinks World War II is still going on, or island natives hunting heads without the use of working drums, or another group of natives going to war due to bad drum playing.

The TV show lasted for 3 seasons. But the castaways were marooned on the uncharted desert isle for 15 years until they were rescued on a 1978 TV movie reunion.

Everybody looked 15 years older,... except for Ginger. Hmmm. She must have come out of that traumatic experience as a totally different woman. Yeah, that's it.

The Professor could have performed cosmetic surgery on the island.
