  • 2012 NA HOKU HANOHANO Awards

    THE HAWAII ACADEMY OF RECORDING ARTS (HARA) ANNOUNCES THE FINAL BALLOT FOR THE 35TH ANNUAL NA HOKU HANOHANO AWARDS - The Na Hoku Hanohano Awards Dinner & Live Broadcast will be held May 27th at the Hawaii Convention Center’s Kalakaua Ballroom.
    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE --- Tuesday, April 10, 2012

    Honolulu, HI – The Hawaii Academy of Recording Arts (“HARA”) has announced the Final Ballot Nominees for the 35th Annual Na Hoku Hanohano Awards, per below. There are 27 categories, including Technical and Adjudicated categories, as well as a brand new category, International Album of the Year, with artists from Japan and Korea among the finalists.

          While Raiatea's album is very good, it's Mailani's shutout that surprises me more. I expected Waipuna to do well (so many nominations), and Kuana Torres Kahele, too - I think the prize that most pleased me was Song Of The Year going to "Na Vacqueros" - it's such a lovely work, sung in Hawaiian and Spanish, and it tells the story of the women who accompanied the paniolo in Hawai`i.

          And now that the awards are done, I am permitted to say that I had the great honor this year of being on the judicial panel for the first-time award of International Album. I am grateful to HARA for extending the invitation to me to participate.
