Former Fleetwood Mac member Bob Welch has died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound at the age of 65, the Associated Press reports. Welch was found dead by his wife in their Nashville home today just after noon. According to Nashville police spokesman Don Aaron, the musician had been dealing with health issues recently and left a suicide note.

Welch was a guitarist and vocalist in Fleetwood Mac from 1971 until 1974. He joined the group along with Christine and John McVie, and helped establish a more melodic direction for the band after the departure of guitarist Peter Green.

Sad to hear this as I was aware of Fleetwood Mac since 1972 or so when the Mystery to Me album was first released. Always loved "Hypnotized" and "Sentimental Lady" which was off of 1972's Bare Trees..... and became a solo hit for Welch in 1977 (re-recorded). I think his time with Fleetwood Mac definitely put the band into the realm of AOR radio back in the day before they hit the big time (with membership changes Nicks/Buckingham) in 1975.

    I'm still here. Are you?

Yep, sad, you can only hope he was OK with it.
I liked that era of the Mac, they played some really good non-AOR shows, even tho the one time I saw them and Rory Gallager open for Deep Purple they dogged out.

By the time I was a follower of Fleetwood Mac (concert at HIC about 1977?), it was the lineup with Stevie Nicks, etc.

It's sad when someone dies too early (yes, 65 is too early). RIP
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

Yep, Fleetwood Mac with Nicks/Buckingham were here at Blaisdell in 1977 and then again in 1980. Saw that line-up twice. I think they may have come with either Bob Welch or the earlier Peter Green line-up to the Crater Festivals or something farther back. I am sure someone here probably knows.

BTW, Fleetwood Mac recorded two different songs with the title "Angel". There's this one from 1974 with Bob Welch on lead vocals and later from the Tusk album Stevie Nicks did another song with the same title.

It was the Welch band that did the Crater, '75 I think.
