  • Outrageous UH salaries

UH poly-sci prof. Noel Kent speaks up for a lot of folks on the Manoa campus when he calls out outgoing robber-baron chancellor Virginia Henshaw.

    http://www.hawaiinewsnow.com/story/18820304/uh

Kent is a long-time professor at UH and says faculty and students are "demoralized" and "in despair" over what he calls astronomical executives' salaries. He's among critics who've questioned Hinshaw's 10 month sabbatical pay, as she leaves office, of almost $290,000.

He continued shouting at Hinshaw, "How do you justify a $292,000 a year?" UH spokesman Dan Meisenzahl stepped in and escorted Kent away from the interview site, saying, "Sir, this is not the time." Kent replied, "This IS the time! No one else is talking about this. It's time we talked about this!"
    Hinshaw's response to this?

Shortly after, we asked her to respond. I said, "Do you feel that it's a fair compensation for the job that you've done?" Hinshaw replied, "Yes. And I think it's very common practice across the U.S., and I plan on trying to assist the university and Hawaii in any way I can going into the future."
Oh sure! Something that is "common practice" makes everything a-ok. This, while students are dealing with ever-rising tuition costs while receiving reduced services in return.

And it's not just Hinshaw's sabbatical pay that's at issue. For years, there's been an unrest over the growth of the administrative positions and the salaries they have been receiving. The new chancellor's salary (almost $100,000 more than his predecessor) seems to be detached from the reality of cutbacks that is seemingly taking place everywhere else in the UH system.

Bravo, Prof. Kent, for finally saying what needed to be said and bringing attention to the issue of outrageous salaries being paid to what has become a top-heavy bureacracy.

    Indeed.

As well as other so-called "public servants" who live on the backs of the middle-class and poor.

It's almost like the old royal/noble system, all over again.

$292,000? I suppose that if we didn't pay them that, they would find a way to steal it.

Shouting is not "saying". He brings the University into disrepute with such behavior.

Disrepute among robber-baron elitists, perhaps. We should probably be trying to attract raw talent with low-ball starting wages and appropriate performance-based raises rather than paying top-dollar for over-the-hill veterans. Also, why does an administrator need a sabbatical? Sounds like a fancy name for a long paid vacation.

May I always be found beneath your contempt.

I don't know. Maybe it's a rip-off. But if so, the time to protest it was when it was promised, not now, after the commitment has been made. And at the University, we expect civil and reasoned discussion, not disrupting someone else's interview with rudeness to create a news event. How can University professors be respected in the community, or respect themselves, when they behave this way?

            "Maybe" a rip-off?

Tenured UH profs get paid half their salary for a year-long sabbatical. At $287,400 for a 10 month sabbatical, Hinshaw is getting paid her full salary as a chancellor.

I don't about you, but I believe in calling a spade a spade.

Yeah well, the problem here is that this "commitment" to pay Hinshaw's bloated salary for taking a sabbatical was made in the sneakiest way possible. Read, and learn.

Greenwood denied that UH purposely scheduled the Regents' Jan. 19 vote on Hinshaw's sabbatical right after the holidays when few people would be paying attention and when the board met on Kauai, away from the watchful eye of the media, faculty and other observers on the Manoa campus.
Sure, Greg! You expect concerned students and faculty to fly to Kauai just to attend a BOR meeting where they can express their views on controversial matters like this. I'm sure all those good folks have money to burn on airfare.

Moreover, Jan. 19 fell on a Thursday. An instructional day on the UH campus. Well, that sure gives a lot of time for students/faculty to attend such a meeting, right?

I guess your definition of "respect" differs radically from mine. Respect is not something engendered by sheepishly being silent when you see something terribly wrong is happening.

As the HNN article that I linked to shows, here is what Hinshaw's sabbatical pay could have funded:

To put Hinshaw's sabbatical pay in perspective, if the UH chose to use the $287,400 elsewhere next school year, the university could add 63 courses taught by part-time lecturers, something students said would be a better use of the funds.

"I know a lot of my friends, they can't graduate on time, because the classes are just, they get filled very quickly and they're not offered every semester anymore, so it would definitely help out to put some funds into that," said Will Shontell, a UH Manoa senior.
Hinshaw's sabbatical pay will cost enough to absorb the tuition of 33 in-state students for a year.
The money could also pay for UH Manoa's main library to open weekends or 24 hours a day the week before exams, students said. Hamilton Library is now closed weekends and has reduced hours because of budget cuts.
You think that Prof. Kent should be embarrassed about his behavior? To me, the person who should be the most embarrassed is Hinshaw for accepting excessive sabbatical pay while UH students absorb 35% worth of increases in tuition over the next 5 years, despite cutbacks in services. Where is all that extra money going, if not back to the students in academics and services? I'll tell ya. Right into the pockets of all these overpaid chancellors, vice-chancellors, asst. chancellors, etc...... And now, a chancellor who is going on sabbatical getting full pay. That pretty much was the straw that finally broke the camel's back as far as Prof. Kent was concerned. And you're going to give him a tongue-lashing for not being civil. You're going to rip into him for not flying all the way to Kauai on a work day where he could express his views before the BOR. Whatever, Greg.

Prof. Kent speaking out for those students and staff members who feel demoralized by the current state of affairs,.... AFAIAC, give that man a medal!

I totally agree.... it's better to remain silent, courteous and respectful while someone is robbing someone else blind.
