This has been a highly debatable topic, for many years now. There is just as much "proof" that it is metabolized just like regular cane sugar. As a Chef, and licensed nutritionist, and in the setting I work in, we always have to be ahead of the curve on this type of stuff, and to be honest, you would be surprised of how many products you may deal with on a daily basis include HFCS.
The topic has become the new "Egg" topic, where like back in the 80'/early 90's, one day an egg a day was the best you could do, and the next, eggs were evil.
A lot of it just boils down to plain, simple, economics. It is FAR cheaper to produce corn syrup, or beet sugar, than it is to grow, harvest, process natural sugar cane. More and more, studies are showing that the body process it like sugar, as that is all it really is, it is glucose. The reason it is being frowned upon is, it is in a TON of common, everyday ingredients, ranging from salad Dressing/condiments/and "Healthy" Cereals/Cereal bars, to the more thought of Sodas/beverages, and MANY MANY items in between.
Before stigmatizing HFCS, it's important to just remember: EVERYTHING IN MODERATION.
Loads of natural cane sugar is harmful. Corn Syrup is just a cheaper analog, hence why it is used more commonly, especially in the U.S. market.
Once I get to work tomorrow, and can log onto the server, I am happy to post a write up( with research backed info) I had to do to calm the concerns of a few Uber-health nut clients we deal with.
stores in So Cal get $ 1.30 per bottle of coke from Mexico, made with actual sugar. People swear its better and healthier. I must try it sometime.
The Latino Community here, in DC/NOVA only drink it from the "old School" glass bottles, as the Coke bottled down there is still from natural sugar too.
I have had my fair share, as well as Inca Cola, with our monthly Pollo A la Brassa meals, and it IS different, and better, imo. For some reason, I know it's the "real deal" because it make my teeth feel like they are squeaking when I close my jaw. . . I know, doesn't make any sense, but it just has a different mouth feel.
There are literally thousands of distinct chemicals correctly called sugars.
Glucose or Grape Sugar has a unique structure. Most cells of the body can burn Glucose
directly as fuel.
The body has many enzyme systems that can interconvert (sometimes) one sort
of sugar to another.
Sucrose , is a product of the larger Graminae called Sugarcane.
and is a component of the best versions of Coca-Cola..
Fructose is an interesting sugar. One of the few cells that can burn fructose directly
are spermatazoa.
There are many types of Sugars and to tar all with one brush is short sighted.
