    Default The '12 DNC.

C-SPAN has online a 15 minute video "Women of the U. S. House of Representatives" with a brief presentation from Tulsi Gabbard. It's about 11 minutes in: http://www.c-span.org/DNC/Events/Wom...ives/C3870530/.

I didn't get to see much of it tonight because of a long phone call, however i did get to see Michelle Obama's speech and they do not get any better.

I wonder about why the people who hate Obama hate him. Is it just that they can't imagine a Black (half Black, half white, actually) exercising power well? And why believe the lies, why bother believing lies? One of the generals involved in the elimination of Osama bin Laden said President Obama was "magnificent". Magnificent. How can anyone seriously believe an individual can be constitutionally incapable of exercising power well because he or she is Black, or Asian, or Latino: greatness, magnificence, is where you find it. This is a truly good man doing the best he can with a terribly difficult situation. Four More Years!!

Well, there are the birthers (Obama's from elsewhere -- he's not like us), the hicks (Harvard Law?? -- Give me a break!), the libertarians (Obamacare forces us to buy health insurance), the fatcats (it's immoral to tax millionaires more than paupers). Who have I left out?

President Clinton just finished his speech. Like most Clinton speeches, it ran a little long but he hit point after point, he dealt in specifics. He has undeniably been the most successful president of our lifetimes. Its ironic that both he and President Obama came from majorly disadvantaged economic backgrounds, but both, by their own intelligence and hard work, achieved success: the Republican fairy tale, and yet both of them understand that the country goes forward, or sinks, as a unified whole.

That was the old Republican fairy tale. Times change. In the DNC keynote, Joaquin Castro related some advice that Romney offered to a student in Ohio on how to succeed in today's economy. Start a business, Romney suggested. The student protested that he didn't have the money to start his own business. Romney's advice? Borrow from your parents!

I was hoping for a twist ending with Joe Biden getting the nomination for a quirky ending 2012 DNC film. Directed by Clint Eastwood.

Wasn't there a member of HT who was a Hawaiian delegate to the DNC four years ago?

I believe it was Anderson Cooper on CNN who said last night, "there seems to be more enthusiasm at the DNC than the RNC, but, and I am not saying anything negative, the delegates at the RNC were older and whiter."

I thought Clinton's speech was a bit long but it was NEVER boring and he had a lot of ground to cover!

I like both Sandra Fluke and Elizabeth Warren. Both are better looking than Palin (which is only an observation not intended to be a qualification) and both have way more substance than the partial term governor of Alaska. Matapule guarantees that Fluke will have a future in National politics! (But I can also see a porn film coming out about her similar to "Who's Nailin' Palin." I'm sure a title has already been determined. )

In watching the conventions I get the impression that the Democrats are earnest, capable people who are very tired of being lied about, while the Republicans are just a bunch of phonies trying to run one more scam.

Evidently someone has stolen Romney's tax returns and is threatening to release them. Naughty, naughty!! However, for several months there has been the Stericycle rumor, it may be true, it may not, the tax returns would probably either confirm its truth (in which case the GOP will probably need to nominate somebody else)(or do the most AMAZING, stupendous political contortions in history!), or lay the rumor to rest for once and for all.

Ryan has evidently also lied about his time in a marathon. Why lie? Running a marathon in any amount of time is a major accomplishment, at my best I ran the equivalent of a half marathon a few times, and in undeniably bad time. Ryan has nothing to be ashamed in finishing a marathon no matter how bad his time was, you just don't need to lie, its pretty childish and you do usually get caught. Its best to have a good truth and let that be your defense.

This is what he said when I saw him interviewed. He said he ran some marathons (plural). He actually ran one. He said his best time (actually it was his only time) was about 3 hours but definitely under 4 hours. His time was actually 4 hours and 3 minutes. Sarah Palin ran a marathon faster than Ruin. In fact, Ruin's time was only slightly faster than Al Gore's time in the marathon. Gore was almost twice Ruin's age when Ruin ran his only marathon. Matapule has never run a marathon but if he did it would be in the "Clydesdale Division" in other words send out a horse to bring him back in! Matapule has ridden a couple of Century bike runs, on a mountain bike. Time was a little over 6 hours.

The jobs figures came out today, not good, over 120,000 expected, only 96,000 created. Alas. Looks like Republican obstructionism against Obama's jobs program succeeded. Whoppee! Odd to have the government working against the interests of the people, of the country, for the selfish political ends of one party. And yet...are we better off than 4 years ago? Why, yes! The last few months of the Bush regime the economy lost as much as 700,000 jobs a month, so gaining 96,000 is actually quite an improvement. I wonder, if Romney wins, if the Democrats should obstruct everything the Republicans want to do. Some seems obvious enough, like not letting them privatize social security and medicare. Remember in one of Bush's state of the union addresses when he sadly moped that he had been unable to privatize social security and the entire Democratic delegation rose in applause? A precious moment of the Bush presidency, right up there with the Chinese doors. Its not likely Romney would ever come up with any jobs program other than cutting even more taxes for billionaires, but if he did, would it be right for the Democrats to block it or anything else he wanted to do just out of spite? Or should we get beyond that. I really don't know how Obama puts up with those shiri no anas.

Actually, I think Romney would come up with a jobs program of some sort, if the economy didn't improve on its own. Those billionaires will understand that their own prosperity depends on having workers to buy the goods that their businesses sell. They're not dumb -- just amoral. It's those of us who don't contribute enough to their bottom lines who better watch out.

You really would think they'd understand that. It seems so obvious: who do you want walking into your store, a bunch of poor people who can only afford to gawk, or prosperous middle class people who are eager and able to buy your stock? But often people, especially Republicans, just let their prejudices rule, even if Obama gave them a cure for cancer they'd find something to bitch about. Everything worked so well under the liberal regime. Remember how cheap University of California was? It made sense: you graduated all these well educated well payed tax payers, it was better than self financing, it more than paid for itself. Oh well, I could go on. Why abandon success? WHY???

Tulsi Gabbard is on a panel discussion now on MSNBC -- "UP w/ Chris Hayes", Sunday from 2-4am our time. Among other things, she got to talk briefly about her conversion from an earlier conservatism.
