How about expressing some thoughts in Pidgin? A question, is it true there is a movement to save Pidgin? Nice.

I think the creator of LOLcatz was trying to incorporate a loosely based form of Pidgin into their work.
I remember a newspaper I delivered around Schofield Barracks between 80-82 that had a small piece of teaching pidgin in it. My brother had cut a bunch of them out and put them in a photo album but it disappeared. I have quite a few Chefs now that say "ono", and "broke my mouth". . . . oh, and "duck Soup" for when something is super easy. I am not sure how authentic Pidgin it is for all Hawaii natives, but I LOVED the new set of kitchen slang I learned working on Oahu.

If authenticism (is that a word, LOL!) can be based on how long it has been around, I would say it's as good as Big Red considering it was there when we arrived in 79 and likely there long before that.
I have only come across one pic of my brother post Hawaii, that he wasn't flashing the Hang Loose sign that I had put on his tombstone and I will always hear the way he said "waz up seesta!!?" when we saw each other.

Someone should 'splain the meaning of "ono" and "broke my mouth". I've seen people write that in forums, before, and have yet to figure out what either of them mean....

Broke da mouth = tastes really good

Skade is the right spelling and pronunciation. But, some readers might get confused when you goggle "skade", and it's has a different meaning. You have to type in skade-pidgin to find it.

The word shaka have a lot of different meaning depending how you use it.

shaka cah...nice looking car
shaka eye...sharpshooter as in agates.
shaka laka....good looking
shaka as in hang loose...a slogan Mayor Fasi made up as in the "shaka"sign

The shaka sign as it is known now used to be a silent Howsit...we used to flash it with our arms on our side and a flip of the wrist.

The news article says: "Scholars stress Pidgin is definitely not just slang." That's true, at least for the Pidgin now spoken here in Hawaii. However, whether the contemporary Pidgin of Hawaii is a language separate from English, rather than being a dialect of English, is another matter entirely. I doubt that many other scholars would agree with Kent Sakoda about that. It seems harmless enough for the Census to count it as a separate language, though.
