Perhaps every U.S. citizen is required to wear a visible QR code, so you can bring up their name and personal information with a smartphone? What would you do with that information, to improve your safety?

Man, they seriously need to create more rocket launcher control laws. This sh*t is gettin' out of hand.

The crowds created an open air gun market.
People turning in old firearms may not realize their collector value. Speaking of the capitalistic spirit, I wonder if anyone bought a whole bunch of sub-$100 handguns to turn in. Kinda like fishing soda cans out of the trash for the HI-5 refund.

Senate Bill 69 proposes spending $100,000 of state money on a gun buy-back program.

There's very little detail about how they plan to spend the $100,000 or the justification for the specific amount. Is that typical in spending bills? I'm new to all of this legislative stuff.

Public hearing tomorrow, 1/31/2013, in room 224 3:00 PM.

Deadline for submitting testimony was today at 3pm. Announcement of the hearing was on the 28th. It seems they provided the bare minimum of public notice (48 hours).

The state legislature has a citizen's guide. It's not great, but it's a decent way to start learning about this important institution.

Experts say that focusing on mental illness will NOT quell gun violence.

Public health and firearms experts assert that focusing on mental illness is unlikely to achieve a significant reduction in gun violence, because the vast majority of shootings are the handiwork of people who do not fit the profile of those deemed dangerous. Moreover, by shifting the debate away from gun control and toward mental health concerns, proponents run the risk of further stigmatizing mental illness, discouraging those who confront it from seeking professional help.

"Gun violence is a mental health issue only to a very small extent and to a much smaller extent than most people assume," said Paul Appelbaum, a psychiatrist and the director of the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons' Division of Law, Ethics and Psychiatry.

"Most gun violence is just not committed by people with mental illness," he said. “Were we somehow to stop violence by anyone with a mental illness -- as unlikely as that outcome might be -- we would be safer, but only a teeny bit safer. As much as these incidents attract everybody's attention and concern, they are a tiny fraction of the people who get killed in this country every year."

Mental illness is the cause of fewer mass shootings than the public perceives, Appelbaum said. "If you look at the lists that are put together of those kinds of events, they are primarily family and workplace violence episodes," he said.

Matapule takes it as a personal affront that the NRA did not include him on their anti-gun list! Matapule would be proud to be included with those people who are on the list. The NRA and their members are a laughable joke.

Please, some of you NRA gun nuts on HT send in matapule's name to your ridiculous (meaning deserving of ridicule) organization's anti-gun list!

OK, send us your real name, address and other qualifying data, and we'd be glad to send it in.

However, don't hold your breath... or maybe you SHOULD hold your breath.

Mata, you are small potatoes with a big heart. Your proposals are of no interest to the NRA, about the same as any other 25% of the populace. You are honorable, however in sticking up for your beliefs. If you were in a position to make a difference, they might be interested. Run for office.

Hell, someone has to do it, right?

Paul Krugman has now offered his opinion on gun control:

"I think that the terms of the debate have shifted," Krugman said. "Now the craziness of the extreme pro-gun lobby has been revealed, and that has got to move the debate and got to move the legislation at least to some degree.
"The NRA is now revealed as an insane organization, and that matters quite a lot," he added.

The "craziness of the the extreme pro-gun lobby....the NRA is now revealed as an insane organization" certainly says it all!

On the off-chance you actually don't know, liberals favor gun control and conservatives are against it, ordinarily.

Yeah. The Internet makes it easier for us to dehumanize each other. It also doesn't help that this is an emotional issue.
