I was thinking about our representatives in congress. Their hands drenched in blood. It doesn't even register on them, it couldn't matter less. Just please the NRA so they can keep their jobs, thats what matters to them. The very picture of what it takes to succeed in America.

That is an example of our system of government succeeding, not failing. Our system is designed to protect the rights of minorities against the tyranny of the majority. Maybe I presume too much. Do we agree that keeping assault weapons out of the hands of crazy people, terrorists, criminals, and gangs is a good idea? If so, how do we go about it. Background checks seemed like a pretty good idea. Maybe it really is better to do nothing.

While the Second Amendment does indeed say that "the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed,” it says so in the context of maintaining state militias. Historically, the amendment was interpreted as the right of militias, not individuals, to bear arms.

Once again, most people acquiring firearms do not object to background checks.

IN FACT most NRA members and other pro-gun activists insist on background checks, done on a local level.

What we object to is nationwide gun registration, which in the world's history has always led to gun confiscation!

But that's exactly what you want, isn't it, Matapule?

That's what Obama wants, and what other tyrannical socialists want as well.

Americans must fight tyranny, but if only the military, the police and TV personalities (like Roseanne Barr) have guns, we're trumped. And screwed.

Certainly things like full-automatic weapons or sawed-off shotguns are illegal, but, $24 million? Are there that many out there? Illegally-owned is another category, but this seems to avoid those....

In saying that a well regulateded militia is necessary to the security of the state the Amendment is making it very clear that the militia is of the state, an organ of the state, a tool of the state, a means of the state for preserving order, there is no hint in the Amendment that the people should be armed to enable them to resist the state, none, zero , not a hint. "A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be infringed." The Amendment comes very close to saying that ownership of arms be limited to people in the state militia. If the purpose of having arms available is to assure the security of the state, as the Amendment says it is, that argues 100 % against the concept of the people being armed in order to thwart the state. It says what it says.

Putting this where it belongs:

Please note the Second Amendment says "the security of a "free" state not of a police state. In that one word is proof that the founders wanted to have us as militia to protect against our own government gone wrong.

Its just a question of being reasonable. Is it reasonable to prevent insane people from getting assault weapons? Is it reasonable to prevent terrorists from getting assault weapons? Is it reasonable to keep assault weapons out of the hands of gangs? Do we actually want gangs armed with the latest in military assault weapons, roaming our neighborhoods? How is our safety preserved by allowing insane people to acquire the means of mass slaughter? So just be reasonable. Its not that hard.

I think background checks should be mandatory, but universal gun registration and arbitrary denial based on having PTSD (which most often manifests harmlessly) or having seen a psychiatrist in your lifetime is inexcusable.

Be reasonable.
