    Re: AlohaDNS.com

Interesting offering. I'm curious. Why would someone use AlohaDNS.com rather than a large-scale provider like OpenDNS.com? Is it simplicity (insofar as it looks like just whitelist/blacklist without the crowdsourced categorization)? Is there a benefit to the "local" element (though smaller setups may be less stable)? And how does the "family friendly" offshoot filter porn -- based on what blacklist or system?

And what's the benefit to AlohaDNS? Ads on blocked or unresolved domain pages like OpenDNS? Upgrades to premium features?

      Re: AlohaDNS.com

We built AlohaDNS.com because we wanted to offer the service to our Lava.net customers. So those customers will get tech support and any added features. However, since the load is so low and its something so powerful, we've decided to open it up for users, because OpenDNS is getting too complex.

      1. blocking - categories aren't always accurate, so we allow white or black list. OpenDNS would never be able to black list Hawaii Gambling houses (too small of a domain).

      2. reporting - we email the admin a nightly report of all blocked and allowed domains and in the correct time zone.

      3. performance - we don't use anycast, so you know exactly where your request are going vs. letting anycast decide.

4.. cost - Its free, Open DNS will be charging $50 / month per IP after 12/14.

Edit to #4 - it'll be free for @lava.net users always.

Free for at least 6 months.

        but we're debating charging $19.99 / month vs. Open DNS $1,500 /year.

We don't bait , we're not even taking a credit card # now, its wide open to sign up.

            1. it will always be free to lava.net users , just have to be coming from 64.65.64.0 /18 (DSL , T1 , Ethernet or Colo)

            2. right now we don't even have a billing engine attached, so its free to all users.

              sign up here is free.

Service for Lava.net customers will ALWAYS be free.

We most likely will grandfather in early adopters.

Trying it now out right now is free for everyone.

Also if you look around, no one does this for free anymore... OpenDNS is expensive ~ $150 / month.
