  • Is it possible to join this forum?

On another forum a user named Anitya asked some questions about retiring in Hawaii that I thought others here could answer better than I. So, I suggested that she post here. So far, she has not been able to. She writes:
    Hi Greg,

Seems like membership (registration) to Hawaiithreads is on an invitation only basis. See here - http://www.hawaiithreads.com/register.php?.

As suggested in that page I sent an email to Ryan Ozawa at kokua@hawaiithreads.com with a link to this M* thread and your name to give him a context for who I am and why I would like to be a member at Hawaiithreads. It has been a week since I sent my email and I have not yet received a reply. Could you please advise?

    Thank you for your help.

    A
    Greg

It happens, but she might have to wait. He'll eventually get to it.

How long is the waiting time usually?

Humm, wonder if newcomers not being able to join the forum is one reason it is so nearly uninhabited nowadays.
Now run along and play, but don’t get into trouble.

It is still possible to join HawaiiThreads, and I generally don't let pending requests go for more than a week. I didn't see Anitya's email until Jan. 16, and Anitya got her account set up on Jan. 24 after some back and forth.

Wow....amazing that this has become so exclusionary. Realistically, why would you think that this would promote any sort of lively interaction?
                    Very sad, IMHO.
I have not checked out this forum in a very long time. I was clearing out my bookmarks and decided to log on.
You've GOT to be kidding here.
Either you want an active fun forum or you want a stuffy boring CLUB.
                    Pick one.
                    Oh....I think you did.

                    What a POOP!!
                    Alooooha!
And I suppose, after this, I will be forever banned from HT. How sad....

Sorry. It's a matter of survival. Without shutting down the built-in registration system, we were seeing tens of thousands of sign-ups per day, thanks to automated spam systems that specifically target the software that runs this (and other) forums. When enough people run these bots, the server is bogged down, and, as many have noticed, occasionally just crashes.

And, of course, there are spam networks that pay people pennies to manually sign up for accounts at forums as well to bypass "human checks" (CAPTCHA) and other barriers... meaning that even if I could review the thousands of new accounts, I wouldn't be able to tell which were people genuinely interested in joining and which were spam accounts just waiting to post about Viagra and Cialis. Long-time users will remember the days when these accounts would squeak through and dump junk into the forum before I could catch them and delete their crummy posts.

And this doesn't even account for actual humans who want to join specifically to cause trouble.

Since the golden days of the message board are clearly behind us, and the types of communities that sustain them are increasingly rare, it seemed reasonable to sustain HawaiiThreads as a smaller and cozier place. Can someone register and start posting immediately? No. And many people don't want to write a personal email to request access and explain why they want to join. I'm sure we're missing out on a lot of interesting folks. But I also know we're avoiding a lot of grief as well.

We still get new users, just not on a daily basis. And yes, that means slow days and the inevitable revival of the thread asking whether HT is dead. But as long as someone finds something of value here, I'm happy to keep it running... if only out of the stubbornness that comes from being on the web for so long and romanticizing the days before Facebook.

There's always the way KSSK does it by giving away prizes to listeners. You gotta buy your audience.

Are you going to put up the money for that?
                          I'm still here. Are you?
