Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Saw the 2-D version that was presented at 7pm on Thursday night (12/17/15) at the Ward Theater.

Lots of people there but the way Ward Theater did it was to offer multiple screens at the same time. This had the effect of having a lot of people waiting at the concession stand, so I said to myself screw the food, watch the movie.

As a Star Wars fan, I am mostly limited to the movies (and the DVD's), watching some of the Clone Wars episodes on the Cartoon Network back in the day and having a couple of books, but that's about it.

The movie has it share of actions, chase scenes and explosions, some humor, lots of bad guys to go around for the good guys to get rid off and no lens flares that washes out the characters that are just standing around.

Still trying to figure out which group was the legitimate galactic government in this movie.

Do plan on seeing this at least two more times with other people. Maybe more by myself.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Saw the 3-d version on Wednesday (12/23/15) with some people I work with and saw the 2-d version again on Friday (12/25/15) with a friend.

One thing I noticed about the 3-d version is that whenever the scene is on a planet the things in the air, like fire embers or snow gets to be more noticeable.

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Saw this with my son last Tuesday.

While it was entertaining, with awesome action scenes, especially flying, some 'feel-good' moments, there was a lot reminiscent of Episode III, and at the conclusion I felt the movie was incomplete, like it had passed too quickly and left a lot out.

I may go to see it again, however, just to see if I missed something that left me feeling incomplete.

No, I wouldn't dare post spoilers! I will say, however that along with the redundant feelings there are some epic surprises.

I have not seen it yet but I am planning on it. What I don't like about it - and it really has nothing to do with what is in the movie at all - is how is was being force-fed on us before the release date.

I can't count how many commercials had a Star Wars tie-in somehow. Really, I get it. The movie is/was coming out. They want you to see it. But don't remind me every ten minutes.

Hey, RoyalHawaiian, welcome to Hawaii Threads. I agree with you about being forced-fed about Star Wars. But it worked! It's turning out to be the highest grossing movie of all time.

That aside, I enjoyed the movie very much. It's the best Star Wars movie since the first (or is it fourth?) episode. Anyway, the one that came out in 1977. Go see this latest version. You'll like it.

Seen it for the 5th today (2/2/16) at the Ward Theater and this was the Open Captioned version.

I was kind of curious when in the movie the name of the character that Max von Sydow plays gets mentioned in the movie, figured that the Open Captioned version might shed some light. It didn't.

Then again I sort of noticed the following things.

The Empire in episodes 4, 5, and 6 had human males in their ranks. The First Order had some human females in their ranks.

During this go around I noticed one of those cloners from episode 2 was a ground crew on a X-Wing. It was during the first time you see the X-Wings at their base.

Kind of wondering what happen to Maz after the battle at her place was over? No mention of her fate in the movie.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015)
Harrison Ford, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Oscar Isaac, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill. Directed by J.J. Abrams.

It’s thirty years after the fall of the Empire, and out of its ruins has risen the First Order, working on a new weapon of destruction. The First Order’s military leader is Kylo Ren, a tortured, possibly crazed villain with a chip on his shoulder. The Resistance, led by General Leia Organa, receives word of long-missing Jedi Luke Skywalker’s whereabouts. With the assistance of Han Solo, the resistance seeks to destroy the new weapon, defeat Kylo Ren, and find Luke.

Against this backdrop emerge three new heroes: Poe, the best X-Wing fighter in the Resistance. Rey, an orphaned scavenger who appears to be much more. And Finn, a deserting Storm Trooper moved by his conscience to assist Rey.

Clearly, it is J.J. Abrams’s goal to bring the Star Wars fandom back aboard the LucasFilm train, reminding it of all the reasons it loves the first three films while making amends for the errors of the second three films’ ways. He does this with more than an adequate number of callbacks to the first trilogy. He also builds a reasonable transition into the new reality of possibly limitless sequels, tributaries, and spin-offs under the franchise’s new Disney umbrella.

Although Abrams goes back to the well more times than necessary, his new characters are compelling and charismatic in ways that the first movie never attempted. Rey and Finn are people I want to root for, people I want to get to know. They’re tinged with mystery and fun to watch. I haven’t yet read any reviews of the film, but I imagine negative commenters will say themes are not merely derivative, but repetitions of those in the previous trilogies, at worst a recycling of stuff we’ve seen before. It’s a valid criticism. Still, I hope these next two films will take the momentum and goodwill from the public response to this one, and run in new directions. There’s no reason what comes next must necessarily mimic The Empire Strikes Back or Return of the Jedi, and with the vast expanse of untapped creative territory at its disposal, it could be no time at all before we’re forgetting all about midi-chlorians, Ewoks, and Jar-Jar Binks.

Action sequences, except for one beautiful, nostalgic trip in the Millennium Falcon, are so-so: interesting but not thrilling. Weaponry and spacecraft aren’t a huge departure from the earlier films, but this is only thirty years after Return of the Jedi, so that doesn’t bother me much. A new droid, BB-8, is kind of a neat next-wave of R2-D2 technology. Effects are pleasing without being distracting, and there is a determined lack of CGI porn, thank goodness. The score, composed once again by John Williams, is perhaps one of the best things about this film. It’s the best score in the series since Empire, almost sure to win an Oscar this year.

This is just the warm-up act for what could very well be an impossible return to glory for a series nearly wrecked by its own creator. I have a good feeling about this.

                  78/100 (Criticker rating)
But I'm disturbed! I'm depressed! I'm inadequate! I GOT IT ALL! (George Costanza)

Re: Star Wars: The Force Awakens

Great review Scriverner. Says all the things in a way that I precisely feel about the movie. After watching it on the first day of release, I gave it a 10 to 10 star... but then I am a Star Wars fan and for me episodes 4 and 5 are two of my greatest all time movies ever with this latest installment being added to the pack.

The Force Awakens brings redemption to this most popular of franchise films, and like you, I do hope the Disney / Lucasfilm producers, directors, and writers move the series in new directions with stories that once again make us say "Wow" after the first viewing.
                    I'm still here. Are you?
