Thread: Hef saves Hollywood

    Default Hef saves Hollywood

To the tune of nearly 1 mil, Mr. Pajamas ponies up at the 11th hour to keep the iconic Hollywood sign, and no homes/buildings will invade that area - http://buzz.yahoo.com/article/1:dd44...Hollywood-Sign

Good for him. It'll be a sad day when this legend, an icon himself, rides into the sunset.

Here's a pic of one of my very few best friends making me jealous recently, w/the forever awesome Barbie Benton at the Playboy mansion. He's the one on the right...

And with two of the newer bunnies

    I couldn't see your pictures.

Thank goodness for Hef, there will never be another like him. What a pioneer he revolutionized so much in his time and still does.

Uh yeah. He and Larry Flynt are real pillars of our society.

Hef is a deserved legend, and indeed, one of my role models.

I'm making an assumption here that you are both men. If that IS the case - what is your problem with Hefner?

If you're talking to me, let me state that I don't have a "problem" with ole' Hugh. I just found the idea of Mr. Playboy being put on a pedestal as being funny. That's all. It's the same sort of reaction I would also have if someone called Ron Jeremy an American living treasure.

yes, I was talking to you. As a female, I don't have a problem with Playboy, the magazine & foundation or whatever its called. Hefner has a rather sleazy personal life but its his & his girfriends choice to live that way so its not my business to judge them. I occasionally read the magazine because it DOES have great articles and if had a cause I cared about, I certainly wouldn't turn down Hefner's money because of his background.

Now, Ron Jeremy is a whole other story...............

And by today's standards for so-called celebrities, it's looking relatively mild by comparison.

Fine, I respect your viewpoint on the matter.

    Now AFAIAC,....

    1) I don't see a great distinction between Hefner and Jeremy. Both of them personally profitted from the adult entertainment industry. (The former as a publisher, the latter as a "performer.") Just because Hef was able to make his money keeping his clothes on doesn't make him any more respectable in my eyes.

    2) Acts of philanthropy doesn't make a difference in my views on how a person makes their fortune and lives their life. Some drug lords are the most generous donors when it comes to funding churches and orphanages in Mexico. Those acts of generosity doesn't make their "transactions" more admirable or respectable in my mind.

Yet, they often serve to provide the basic needs of the poorest members of their community in a fashion unfulfilled by the multiple-strings-attached provisions of international aid agencies.

I think comparing the behavior of members of the pornography community to Mexican drug lords is stretching the comparison just a wee bit too far. AFAIK, neither Mr. Hefner nor Mr. Jeremy have accomplished much in the realm of assassination of their enemies or competitors, have they?

(Walkoff Balk - please avoid the obvious opportunity presented by the use of the word "assassination" in this conversation... )

Isn't his daughter running both Playboy and Playgirl magazines now?

Heh. He's supposed to represent the "average joe" performer, as opposed to "every girl's fantasies" type stars.

I guess I was raised with certain values, like not letting the ends justify the means. Particularly if the "means" in this case leads to the devastation caused by drugs.

A fair enough point, although I wasn't comparing the likes of Hefner and Jeremy with drug kingpins. What I was talking about was the idea that acts of generosity and philanthropy, in itself, automatically transforms or enhances a person's image and standing. Donating to a church doesn't make a criminal godfather a patron saint, any more than a perenially neglectful/abusive father deserves to be parent-of-the-year because he lavishes his children with expensive gifts. I realize that not everyone shares my opinions on these matters, and that's fine. I just come from the viewpoint that one shouldn't let principles be compromised by money, and that one's moral compass shouldn't be altered by personal favors.

Bottom line: Hugh Hefner is Hugh Hefner, AFAIAC. Saving the Hollywood sign makes no difference to me.

Ohhhh, you guys have me rotflmao!! Having personally met both Hef (several times, nothing skanky, I used to help run sound for his mansion parties) and Ron Jeremy (again, nothing icky, just he was working on the same show that I was for a few days), I gotta say, both of these men have the sweetest, friendliest, unbelievably likeable personalities. So, I guess I don't like so much what they do, but I'm very impressed with who they are.
PS, I saw Hef last year. He's got the "old man shuffle" going on, but he still stays up all night! Wow.

If he sleeps during the day like the majority of us sleep during the night then he's done what shift workers have done for eternity...retrained the body's sleep cycle. Just means he's a night person. If he's not sleeping during the day either then WOW, indeed!!!

Don't blame Hugh Hefner for not wanting to leave the playboy mansion.
