    Re: Gambling in Hawaii?

I think it's ridiculous that this is even an issue. Americans have the right to do whatever they want with their money; if they want to wager it on games of chance against a house with the odds in its favor, I don't understand what right it is of the state to prevent them from doing so.

The odds, even when they're straight up, are clear: Over time, you will lose more often than you will win. Understanding that and still going in there is either stupid or a conscious decision to pay for the entertainment gambling provides; either way, you're fully within your rights to engage in such behavior, assuming the money is yours.

The state doesn't protect consumers from bad films; we know that when we go in there, we could be seeing a stinker. That's the chance we take. The state doesn't protect consumers from bad UH football games. Sure, we're paying to watch a winner, but if a winner is not what we get, we understand that it is the nature of sport.

Forget about what the voters want: a majority of the voting populace should have no right to tell me and another person what we want to do with my money, as long as the service being rendered does not itself violate the voters' rights.

I loathe the idea of casino gambling in Hawaii, and don't understand why people want to do it, and know that it's going to cause all kinds of social ills; however, continuing to forbid it is something I loathe even more. Educate the populace; don't treat it like a bunch of babies.

For the record, I obviously agree that decisions like this should be left to voters; when I said "forget about voting on it," I meant forget about voting on letting businesses run gambling operations. Whether or not the state should itself run gambling operations is clearly something that the voters should authorize or reject.

I would vote FOR legalized gambling but AGAINST state-sanctioned gambling. Let the state take its cut from the taxes generated by legal, private operations.

There is so much gambling going on in this state, it's not even funny. Lawmakers put their collective head in the sand saying that since it's not legal, it's not happening. Idiots. One and all.

Like you said, why in the name of avarice shouldn't gambling be legal? It's happening no matter what, may as well collect taxes off it.

Hawaii is losing so much money to something that's already happening, it makes me sick.

But I also believe the consipiracy theories that people are being paid off to vote against gambling. Yeah, paid off by Vega$ casinos. I've heard numbers upwards of 10,000 Hawaii bodies per month heading to Vega$.

Think, 10,000 a month spending money in another state? Insane. When they could be spending right here.

I just don't get it, Is it our goverment or the people who don't want gambling. Everyone I know goes to LV sometime within the year. People who gamble should gamble by voting on the polit who is pro-gambling, the social ills are going to be there no matter what. Look how many plane loads go to LV everyday? I am sure there are lots of addicts on those planes and I never hear about any grumbling that they are addicts? I bet you over 1 Billion $$ of Hawaii's money gets donated to LV every year. What are the statistics anyway on that? everyone who comes back from LV always say they lost $5-10K so if a average plane load of people who gamble....say 200 x $5k = that is $1 million per plane load times 4 plane loads a day = $4 Mil. times 365 days a year = $1,460,000,000 a year! and this is a conservative estimate! 292,000 people a year. so that is over 25% of the population. Imagine all the tax revenue off of that.......and that is just LV. What about the other "Gambling" states??

That's why I think there's credence in the payoff conspiracy.

Why would Vega$ want to sacrifice that kind of moolah?

I agree. I grew up in chinatown, and you can hear the mahjong tiles being 'shuffled' from downstairs. you know, the majhong parlors a block away from the police stations with the lookout at the bottom? The policemen who got busted betting in cockfights?
I reserve judgement about the social ills of gambling tho, until we hear someone from vegas chime in about people losing their homes and families because they cannot control their addiction. Supposedly the NV gambling board wont stand for petty thugs, so crime is supposedly lower in NV?

You seriously think you'd get many touristas who'd want to visit Hawai'i to go a a Disneyland???
I dunno, am I the only one who thinks a theme park in Hawaii sounds good? Perhaps not at the $79 dollar level (I beleive there is a 'kaamaina' level price for local residents), but I've done the Vegas/Disney package before. If tourism is what the state is betting on, why not hedge the bets and make something on each island? Ferry over to Kaholawe for gambling, ferry over to Big Island for DisneyFlagsBush Resort(tm), ferry back to Oahu to fly out or hit the beaches... If you look back at my first post, I did allude that a theme park would have competition in the form of the beaches and other attractions in Hawaii.
Hey, Disney could even use their Lilo&Stich to push the Hawaii theme.

Regarding why so many go to vegas? I couldnt figure it out at first, but I think its because it is so cheap in comparison. For my honeymoon we wanted to go to Disneyworld, which is about $800/person for a package deal ($1600 for 2). Neighbor island is what? $80 R/T pp + $80/night x 4 nights=$400 ($480 for 2 people) A Vegas package is $450 pp, includes air/room/3 meals ($900 for 2). Ive been to vegas 4x in my life, and I dont really gamble. I eat, shop, take in a show. We couldnt afford either, so we stayed in a hotel in Waikiki and played 'tourist' - it was a wedding gift, so I guess it was $100 a night.

Just did some reseach and the latest theme park and Hong Kong has 6.9 million residents. We have what? 1.5M residents?
Had to look up CONUS, and I dunno, they might want to hit a theme park. They go to walmart, sea life park, and mcdonalds, why not a theme park too?
A quick search shows that we had 200k tourists as of August, and HK had 4.1M as of August. So if you said there wasnt enough traffic in Hawaii to warrant a theme park, that would make sense.
Hmm.. Vegas had 3.9M visitors as of May...
LOL, if I was the Emporer of Hawaii, I'd book them both and use the gains to put in central air in the schools and outfit the state buildings with solar electric converters. (dont mind me, its late and I come up with some crazy ideas when its late at night)

If anyone wanted "real" gambling (slots, craps, etc.) they all headed to Jackpot, NV, which was just across the border from ID.
I lived in Idaho too and found out the hard way not to gamble at those bordertown casinos between Idaho and Nevada. In some of these very small towns the biggest building is the casino surrounded by trailer homes. It's how they make money. So the chances of winning are fewer than if going to Vegas itself.

Been to Jackpot and Elko and left penniless. Vegas is where the action is.

These sad-but-true tales are not uncommon, experts say. "For many people, sudden money can cause disaster," says Susan Bradley, a certified financial planner in Palm Beach, Fla., and founder of the Sudden Money Institute, a resource center for new-money recipients and their advisers.

"In our culture, there is a widely held belief that money solves problems. People think if they had more money, their troubles would be over. When a family receives sudden money, they frequently learn that money can cause as many problems as it solves," she says.

                          Re: Gambling in Hawaii?

Ooop, I didn't realize tih thread was here. This is what I posted on the other thread....

I still don't understand why Hawaii has no lottery. 43 states have legal lotteries, and you can add DC, Puerto Rico and the US Virgin Islands to that list.

I love to gamble, and me and the BF won about $2500 from our spare change jar last year when we took it to an indian casino in California. That little windfall covered the costs of shipping our car and crates to Hawaii, with a little pocket money left over. Maybe Hawaii doesn't necessarily need a casino, but why not a casino boat? Or at least a simple, basic lottery? I mean, there's already cockfighting, um, I mean 'rooster enthusiast clubs'...

In addition, how would Hawaii residents be able to have the idea of legal gambling addressed by our lawmakers? Can a petition be created, or something like that? Could this possibly be voted on by the population of Hawaii? Seems to me that as soon as the no gambling laws are changed, investors will be lined up with bids in hand.

You've asked the million dollar question, TG. If you have the opportunity to check out the local newspaper morgue, you'll find that legalized gambling has been debated back and forth almost since statehood. Lots of passionate feelings on both sides of the issue.

Once upon a time, I would have said that I don't think gambling would ever be legalized here during my lifetime. But with Hawaii facing budget shortfalls and the tourism industry faltering in the midst of what could be a severe economic recession,...... who knows? This could be the "perfect storm" scenario where even reluctant state lawmakers finally capitulate and become open-minded towards some form of gambling, like offshore shipboard casinos.

And anybody who says they are AGAINST gambling in Hawaii simply has no clue whatsoever about the extent of gambling in Hawaii. When you find those folks, one thing is for certain, you can safely presume that they are not the brightest bulbs in the chandelier.

I do not gamble. As far as I'm concerned gambling is only a good idea if you are running or cheating.

However, this is an issue of freedom of choice for consenting adults. I support people having legal and safe places to gamble. The alternative is illegal and unsafe places.
