  • recommendation for free website?

hi. you guys are pretty knowledgeable so i bet you can come up with a better idea than me. long story short: i hurt my back about 2 months ago; super painful. bounced back after a week. during my recuperation period, i checked the web to learn about the back, etc. found a great website with a message board. damn! there are a lot of people who have been treated with little respect and understanding by their docs. i posted an idea to the message board that we start a list of docs/specialists/health care professionals by geography who they feel are good, based on personal experience. this would help the newbie find a good doc vs having to waste a lot of time and energy and maybe even risk injury with a bad doc. the owners of the site said they understand the idea but don't want it to happen on their site cuz of liability issues. i understand their concern so i'm hoping to create a very simple site with one purpose: it'll have a list of recommended docs, organized by geography. it'll probably look something like this:

    alabama

    name: dr. no pain
    speciality: surgeon
    contact info: xxxxxxxxxx
    recommended by: babykins

see what i mean? of course, i'll have a little paragraph that'll make it clear that this is a list of docs recommended by those who are (1) regular posters on the spine-health site, and (2) are or have been patients of these docs. we'll also make it clear that this is not a magical list and that there's no guarantee that these guys will be able to perform miracles.

so if you guys can recommend a site that offers free web hosting with as little advertising/pop ups as possible, that'd be great.

(finally, if you're interested, the site that has the message board is http://messageboard.spine-health.com/. if you don't have back problems, count your blessings. many of the posters there have had extreme, intense pain for years. some have become dependent on drugs to dull the pain. consider yourself lucky if you've got a healthy body.)

    thanks all.

I'll setup a subdomain on my site if you'd like, and give you a free e-mail account as well. The subdomain would include FTP access for web publishing, and the e-mail includes both POP3 or webmail.

You might also take a look at http://forums.grunchley.com. I just put up a phpBB forum to play with. You and your friends are welcome to use it. I'll be happy to create subject areas for doctors, medical, whatever you like.

    E-mail me at grunchley@grunchley.com if you're interested.

Oh yeah, there is no advertising whatsoever on my site. The hosting plan I use gives me several subdomains and 500 e-mail accounts, of which I use only a couple. May as well share with the rest of the world.

      thanks grunchley

that was very generous of you and i do appreciate it. late last night, probably around 3 am, i did a search and found that you can create blogs for free and there's no advertising; at least the one i found so thanks but i won't be needing to use your site now.

just to mention it, i was surprised that using moving type would cost about $70! it's cool and i guess they just wanna make some bucks.

what program are you using to create your message board? maybe it's just part of your web hosting plan?

      thanks again!

        Re: recommendation for free website?

I use phpBB to run the forums. It's available for free at http://www.phpbb.com. I also use bblog, which is PHP based, to run one of my blogs. bBlog is available for free at http://www.bblog.com. Both require mySQL, and both require a machine to host them on.

I also use blogger.com to run one of my blogs, since it allows me to post photos from my cellular phone just by e-mailing them in.

You might look at just purchasing your own hosting account. I use 1&1 Communications at http://www.1and1.com, and am very happy with them. The cost is only $9.99 per month and includes three domain name registrations, 500 e-mail accounts, several subdomains, etc.

If you really wanted to get fancy, built or purchase a server and have it co-located at an ISP. I do this with one machine that I use to host another site, as well as to act as an IRC leaf server.

If you have any questions, let me know.

            thanks grunchley

yeah, the free blogs are cool. the automatic interface choices are pretty nice and NO advertising. i love it.

in my case, i just wanted a decent place to post some info that may help people with serious back problems. if you read some of the postings from back sufferers, you'd realize how lucky you are. imagine. some people have been in EXTREME pain for YEARS. moving from one room to another is like a triathalon. getting out of a chair is painful. imagine the impact on your life... anyway, a lot of the posters mentioned going to docs, etc. who treated them with little respect and many times without the hoped-for results. amazing. so i hoped that the web would be able to help these people find health care givers who give a damn based on personal experience. just people helping other people.

took a quick look at your site. cool :-)

aloha shaveice! i commend you for your efforts in trying to make a place for others who have back pain such as yours to go to. a place for quality information, submitted by other sufferers. to bring awareness in something you truly believe in, is half the battle. goodluck and let me know when your site is up, i would like to link it from mine.

i also suffer from other ailments which i have sites linked from my blog. i know first hand what is pain and suffering, both mentally and physically. i know first hand what it feels to be treated without dignity and respect. i know...

once again, good luck and i wish you well in what you are trying to do. it takes "special people" to undertake challenges from the start. you will achieve it, my friend. eh, nice picture you posted of you last night.

                hi lynn

you know, i need to correct myself. i didn't use the phrase "diamond in the rough" in the way i meant it. the "dictionary" defines it as:

Someone or something with potential or talent but lacking training or polish: “Her singing voice is beautiful, but she needs help with her gestures; she’s a diamond in the rough.” This phrase refers to the fact that diamonds found in nature are rough and uneven. They must be cut and polished to bring out their true beauty.

what i meant was, you are a diamond surrounded by a lot of trash!

my idea is soooo simple. the thing that will make it work is if people who suffer from back pain actually give me names of docs, etc. who are good. it depends on that. hope it'll work and help people in the future.

                take care lynn!

                  Re: recommendation for free website?

If you want a discussion forum, I'd still recommend something like phpBB. It's what I use at http://forums.grunchley.com. Nobody is really using it right now, so if you want a forum for folks to discuss pain management, let me know and I'll be happy to tailor the forums any way you like. I've been thinking about just taking the forums offline altogether, but if you have a use for them ...
