One of the greatest contemporary Hawaiian songs ever recorded is the song SO FREE by the KA'AU CRATER BOYS from the Making Waves album. That whole album is excellent.
Just love, love, love that song!

Hah, that's awesome! Great song.
My Hawaiian earworms...
- IZ: Margarita, just about everything on "Facing Future"
- Keali`i Reichel: He Lei No Kamaile
- Mark Keali`i Ho`omalu: Both of his songs on the Lilo and Stitch "island favorites" soundtrack ... Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride and He Mele No Lilo.
Just picked up a CD from the latter yesterday, so I'll see if I get any more from his list
The English ones are also mostly from the L&S ST, and probably cheesy by most standards, but still fun and get stuck in your head:
- Lahaina, The Volcanoes
- My Little Grass Shack, Lisa Loeb
- Coconut, Nilsson
- The Old Hawaiian Way, Big Kahuna
- Pineapple Princess, Annette Funicello
- And of course I'm including the English songs on Facing Future here too...
I should also add, the Jump5 remix of Hawaiian Rollercoaster Ride. It's... different.But it's a pretty cool interpretation of the original. It's on iTunes if anyone wants to give it a listen...

Ka'au Crater - you dont write & ANYTHING by The Barefoot Natives!
Aloha!
I do not know if you are still around, but I have been looking for this song for over a dozen years too!
I recently found (thanks to some very wonderful people online) that I had been looking in the wrong direction for it!
The title of the song is actually "Bottles & Cans", and it wasn't by Osorio and Borden (although they might have a version too, I don't know)... but the hit version I listened to over and over in Hanalei and Honolulu was by Ron Kuala'au...wow! So now you should be able to find it online too ^_^
And here are the lyrics you were looking for also:
written by Thomas Merrill
performed by Ron Kuala'au
Bottles and cans, old pots and pans
Even a half jug of wine
Humpty-back jugs, unlimited junk
Today the Makawao Dump is fine
He comes down before daybreak, in dim and misty haze
Browsing through moments of old yesterdays
...for the good times, and bad times
...old times, and sad times
...sometime in your life, you may hear Louie say:
Bottles and cans, old pots and pans
Even a half jug of wine
Humpty-back jugs, unlimited junk
Today the Makawao Dump is fine
To those who are passing by, it's merely a sin
Full of castaway nothings, all worthless to them
...but to Louie they are treasured things
...valuable, pleasures of things
...all things, with no strings, just ask, and he will lend
Bottles and cans, old pots and pans
Even a half jug of wine
Humpty-back jugs, unlimited junks
Today the Makawao Dump is fine ...![]()
Love this sweet Fijian goodbye song called "Isa Lei".
YouTube
Sing along with it!
Isa Lei Lyrics
Isa Isa vulagi lassa dina
Nomu lako au na rarawa kina
Cava beka ko a mai cakava,
Nomu lako au na sega ni lasa.
Isa Lei, na noqu rarawa,
Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka
Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa,
Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Vanua rogo na nomuni vanua,
Kena ca ni levu tu na ua,
Lomaqu voli me'u bau butuka
Tovolea ke balavu na bula.
Isa Lei, na noqu rarawa,
Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka
Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa,
Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
Domoni dina na nomu yanuyanu,
Kena kau wale na salusalu,
Mocelolo, bua, na kukuwalu,
Lagakali, maba na rosi damu.
Isa Lei, na noqu rarawa,
Ni ko sana vodo e na mataka
Bau nanuma, na nodatou lasa,
Mai Suva nanuma tiko ga.
ENGLISH TRANSLATION
Isa, Isa you are my only treasure;
Must you leave me, so lonely and foresaken?
As the roses will miss the sun at dawning,
Every moment my heart for you is yearning.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling,
Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow;
O, forget not, when you're far away,
Precious moments beside dear Suva.
Isa, Isa, my heart was filled with pleasure,
From the moment I heard your tender greeting;
'Mid the sunshine, we spent the hours together,
Now so swiftly those happy hours are fleeting.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling,
Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow;
O, forget not, when you're far away,
Precious moments beside dear Suva.
O'er the ocean your island home is calling,
Happy country where roses bloom in splendour;
O, if I could but journey there beside you,
Then forever my heart would sing in rapture.
Isa Lei, the purple shadow falling,
Sad the morrow will dawn upon my sorrow;
O, forget not, when you're far away,
Precious moments beside dear Suva.
Life is either an adventure... or you're not doing it right!!!
The 'wash your hands' jingle currently going around has me hoping for a full CD release soon.
One of my Hawaiian language favorites is "Ka Wai Lehua A'ala Ka Honua" by Kawai Hewett but only his version. Nobody else has the kind of magic he has in that song with his halau, Aaron Mahi on bass and Haunani Apoliona on slack key.
Another one sort of both is the Kahumoku Bros. "Ho'kupu Kama Pua'a". Such a well written song.
Gabby's "Pu'uanahulu" is another awesome song.
I mostly prefer Hawaiian language songs.
English ... "Waimanalo Country Song" - Jerry Santos
"Maui Mountain Home" - Sons of Hawai'i
I'm kind of stuck on titles at the moment.
Ka Huila Wai - Israel Kamakawiwo'ole
Bump!
Im a violinist/violist, and its time for me to learn some popular classic Hawaiian music! Id love some recommendations for songs that arent too difficult,Thanks!
~ This is the strangest life I've ever known ~
I've been listening closer and rediscovering my old Hawaiian language favorites--songs you know from hearing them all the time but never bothered to follow. That's been a pleasure. It's a good excuse to learn how to bang em out on the uke, too. I hope you have fun adding the violin to that, turtlegirl.
For Island music sung in English, J Boog's "Backyard Boogie" has been treating me pretty well so far this year...
Also, Makawao Dump/Bottles and Cans fans: thanks for the memories of that great social scene. What's Upcountry for "swap meet," eh?
