Hey, I really stunk up that Permatech commercial. Am I in the running?

To clarify: I don't expect the kids to be "good" actors. What bugs me is their lack of enunciation. They sound like their mouths are full of marbles.

I realize this is your area of expertise It seems to me that they should be able to do a little better than that. I think the ads' producers (or whoever's responsible) rely too much on the "cute" factor. I'm sure there are keiki out there who can speak clearly!

I tend to cringe when I get scripts for local commercials that contain on-camera dialogue. They're always tough to cast and the best talent in the audition gets the job! I do notice, however, that many (definitely not all) of the commercials with kids who speak are lower budget advertisers who are probably using family and friends as talent.

Enunciation is usually a learned skill and within the context of acting there are enunciation exercises taught by specialized acting coaches to those who have an obvious problem. I know we used to have a specialist here but I don't know if she's still around. These are ongoing exercises that take practice; not something taught in one lesson. Most parents don't have the money for the amount of classes a child should take or they spend the money unwisely on classes that are of no benefit.

And, yes, the 'cute' factor is important...just like it is with animals! I have a project coming up where I have to cast both kids and a dog!

Now, for an off-topic comment! 'Cute' factor + enunciation = the Welch's Grape Juice commercials! (OT 'cuz they're nationals, not locals!)

Hey, but that local anti-smoking commercial with the little kids pronouncing "upper-respiratory...blah blah blah... heart disease!" were great! That one kid who did the heart disease part was killer!
Make trouble, have fun, do good stuffs.

The mispronounced 'upper respiratory' and the 'heart disease' lines are the same boy. The editing was brilliant...the mispronounciations of 'upper respiratory' are woven thruout the spot then, finally, at the end the kid appears to give up and says something easier instead...'heart disease'. The look on his face is priceless! Those are award winning spots, btw. Great concept. Excellent direction. And, we got lucky with the kids. How that happened was explained in this thread:
                http://www.hawaiithreads.com/showthr...0721#post40721

Another winner was the boy who said, "Gotta light?"!

I know what you mean. Remember the PSA about Hawaiians and going to the library? ALL the kids in that ad say LIBERRY! I surprised no one checked the enunciation of that word.

That is a good one, and I thought of it immediately after hitting "send" on my last post. Natch!

I guess the guy in the State Farm ad's "wife" must have divorced him because the last I seen, he was golfing with and "old bag". LOL

All of the State Farm commercials are dramatizations of true stories, however the agents are the real deal. The stories are theirs. Since I don't think State Farm offers full coverage medical insurance in Hawaii, I think the pig spot is more a human interest story about a couple's experience and how someone (in this case, their ins. agent) happened upon the scene and came to their rescue. Ya know, "Like a good neighbor..."!

Good eye! This is an example of 'over exposure', which is discussed in page 1 of this thread. Sometimes it's just hard to avoid it, tho'. And, for those one or two of you wondering...no...I didn't cast the guy in both spots. Only State Farm, which was the first one!
