Re: Tsunami Warning Issued The Following Schools are Closed today

The tsunami advisory was cancelled about 20 minutes ago.
      See http://the.honoluluadvertiser.com/ar.../br/br10p.html
It was pretty weak anyway. The original advisory said the only thing we might feel here was a slight increase in ocean currents around 11am, but nothing in the way of a tsunami wave.
      Dead issue.

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

But not before I sprinted thru my oh-so-close-to-the-ocean condo (next door to Waianae HS), gathered up some items and loaded up the car!!! I really must keep my 'hurricane kit' supplied all year instead of just May thru Nov.! Lesson learned!

I remember the last tsunami scare Hawaii had back in the 90's. I can't remember exactly what year or where it was generated from. I think it was also in the South Pacific because they ordered most of Oahu's south shore inundation areas to evacuate. Tourists in Waikiki were evacuated to the upper floors of high-rise hotels.

I stayed right in my Waikiki condo unit, which is more than 12 stories above ground level. The civil defense siren nearly blew me out the window when it went off early in the morning while I was still sleeping. I swear, that thing sounds like it's bolted right outside my condo's bedroom window.

Nothing ever came of it but some small tidal ripples.

Next time I'll be waiting at the shoreline for the water to recede with my net and bucket. Eh, best time fo' get Limu and Tako! ...yeah right.

That's what they probably thought in Hilo, back in 1946 and 1960.
