    Re: Favorite pieces of lyrics

"This Land is Your Land", Woody Guthrie

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

Will since MadAzza talked about Justin Timberlake's Sexyback on another thread I have to say I like these lyrics...

      Dirty Babe
You see these shackles baby I'm your slave
I'll let you whip me if I misbehave
It's just that no one makes me feel this way

Now if that isn't poetic, I don't know what is.
I'm disgusted and repulsed, and I can't look away.

YEAH!!! Good one! I've always loved that song -- particularly that line.

"(It) don't mean that much to me, to mean that much to you ..."
Neil Young (from the song "Old Man", I think.)

"The bubble-headed bleach-blonde, comes on at 5. She can tell you 'bout the plane crash with a gleam in her eye ..." Don Henley, "Dirty Laundry." One of my favorite songs of all time.

"It had to be you ... with all your faults, I love you still ..." (etc.) Gus Kahn, Isham Jones Bantam Music Publishing Co./Keyes Gilbert Music Co., recorded by several artists. My favorite version is by Harry Connick Jr., (It was the theme song for the Cliff and Erika morning show on the Q.) Tony Bennet's version is wonderful too ....

"Fly me to the moon -- and let me play among the stars ... " by Bart Howard, as recorded by Tony Bennet. I like the Sinatra version too.

Those are top-of-mind at the moment. There are TONS of others, of course.

Me, too, Erika! Followed by the line, "It's interesting when people die, give us dirty laundry." That whole song is a great slam at what we do for a living. (Not exactly -- it's about TV news, but still ...)

            And it's on my iPods.

BTW, yes, that's "Old Man" you quoted above.

              You need a little clarity?
              Check the similarity...
The overseer rode around the plantation
The officer is off patroling all the nation
The overseer could stop you what you're doing
The officer will pull you over just when he's pursuing
The overseer had the right to get ill
And if you fought back, the overseer had the right to kill
The officer has the right to arrest
And if you fight back they put a hole in your chest!
              They both ride horses
After 400 years, I've got no choices!
The police them have a little gun
So when I'm on the streets, I walk around with a BIGGER one...

Thanks for that affirmation on both counts, Maddie ...

I've also got a favorite and unfavorite (that I just heard on the air) that occur in the same line.

the second, or favorite half, goes ... "How can I measure up to anyone now, after such a love as this."
-- The Who, "Who Are You"

I'll now put the unfavorite line that goes before it -- on the other thread.

Is it a crime, to fight, for what is mine?
Everybody's dyin' tell me what's the use of tryin'?

I've been trapped since birth, cautious, cause I'm cursed
And fantasies of my family, in a hearse

And they say it's the white man I should fear
But, it's my own kind doin all the killin here...

Tupac Shakur, "Only God Can Judge Me"

For some reason, those lyrics stick in my mind when I'm driving in Honolulu or Los Angeles.

                  Why boasteth thyself, O evil men;
Playing smart and-a not being clever!
                  I said you're working iniquity
                  To achieve vanity...

                  Bob Marley, "Small Axe"

When I'm sitting in a board meeting somewhere and someone gets a little long-winded....

A lyric piece that oughta be Oahu's anthem:

                          "Damn this traffic jam."

                          James Taylor
                          .
                          .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Its been one week since you looked at me
Threw your arms in the air and said youre crazy
Five days since you tackled me
Ive still got the rug burns on both my knees
Its been three days since the afternoon
You realized its not my fault not a moment too soon
                              Yesterday youd forgiven me
And now I sit back and wait till you say youre sorry
