There should be an expiration date on the phone books because they seemed to overlap on their years.

              Re: recycling phone books?

I found your thread during a search today on what do to with my phone books. I thought this would help everyone!

"We recommend disposal with the your regular trash. We've determined that these low-grade, low-value papers provide greater benefit in local energy production than in shipping to distant markets to made into new paper products. We target the higher value recyclables with stronger, stable markets to collect for recycling.

Our waste-to-energy facility receives your trash and incinerates it to produce electricity, which we sell to HECO. Currently the HPOWER facility generates 7% of Oahu's electricity and plans are underway to expand its capacity with a third boiler. Waste-to-energy reduces waste to the landfill, just as recycling does, and it contributes to our island's energy sustainability, displacing the need for fossil fuels. Our overall plan to reduce waste to the landfill involves both increases in recycling and waste-to-energy, and balancing both to the best benefit for the island.

We tried for years to collect telephone books for recycling, but the markets simply did not support it. Our local recycling companies had difficulty moving the material year after year. Some years were okay, some were quite costly. The telephone directory companies from time to time invest in attempts to recover the used books for recycling, but it's been inconsistent. You could contact them to inquire about any programs this year. Our position maintains the better advantage is in local energy production."

                  Hey Diane...welcome back!

I wonder if the C&C is experiencing a 'bust' in recycling phone books.

Thanks Diane! I am so irritated at the amount of phone books we get! It's absurd. I love the "mobile" book from one of the companies, how many
people are really going to carry that thing in their cars?

Much aloha and a very happy new year to you!

Wasn't there a law passed that required "opt-in" to get phone books? Maybe that's why Hawaiian Tel distributed a set in December - to be the newest phone book before the new law kicked in.

That's fine. Just make sure you toss them into a trash container that gets routed to HPower and not direct to the landfill. (That's not easy to tell.) Or that HPower isn't shut down for annual maintenance when you do it.

Does that mean it was a waste of time to take old newspapers to the recycling neighborhood bins, if it just goes to HPower? Might as well just throw those old newspapers in the regular trash.

I think the type of paper has something to do with it. I guess there's a market for recycled newsprint, not so much of a market for recycling the phone books.

The question of should we send our newsprint to HPower rather then send it off-island to recycle is a good one.

                            Re: recycling phone books?

I believe there's little market for recycling any kind of paper at the moment. Prices have plummeted.

I was the City's recycling program publicist 10 years ago and they did not want to tell the public to stop recycling when prices collapsed, as they have now.

They felt it made it too complicated for the public...

I proudly admit that when I saw your reply, Tutu, I thought your "bust" link would lead to this thread!
IIRC, that was the only thread she participated in. Welcome back, Diane!

Uh, so where does Oahu's recycled paper currently go?
