All of HT wonders WHY you are avoiding answering this question!
What are you hiding from? Or, what are you hiding?
Kaonohi,
Thanks. Guess you have a lot more consideration than the one posing the question. However, since this topic will derail this thread, and you had the decency to go looking for it, I'll send you a PM.
Bob I'm a Republican much like you. I used to be a staunch Democrat. My boss was Rick Hamada while living next door sharing the same driveway with one of Honolulu's staunchest Democrats former State Senator Tony Chang.
He (Tony) told me something that made me perk up one day. During the day both the Democrats and Republicans are at each other's throats, but by the end of the day, they're still friends and pat each other on the backs acknowledging the bait they put out for the mainstream media to choke on.
Is it all an act? Who knows but in the end it didn't matter as we all played poker together and got ripped drunk in the process.
But one thing I don't dare do and that is to jump into an ocean full of sharks. This pool we call Hawaii Threads is predominantly liberal. As proof in you being flamed left and right because of some of the statements you tell us here.
I do however throw out some bias in your favor as a fellow Republican and for that you do have my respect.
Making Government bigger is not what Republicans want. Entitlements make that happen. Our nation wasn't founded on the principals of a welfare state, it was founded on the essence that anyone who came to our shores can become the best they can be.
You cannot become a power by depending on hand outs. But you can hold the power over the people when you control what you give out. And like we've all heard on this forum: Power corrupts!
By taking away more and more of our free-enterprise system to government control, we are losing power to the government we install. Good or bad, the free-enterprise system is what this country is made of, and it's becoming less and less apparent as we adopt more government control over our lives.
Is it a march to Socialism? Well that's a bold statement and one that's sure to bring up the ire of Democrats who feel otherwise. No one in this freedom-loving country of ours wants to be labeled a Socialist much less a Communist (unless you detest baseball and football )
But the fact remains, we are losing more of our freedoms to government control from bans on smoking to mandating that we purchase health insurance. We definately are marching to Obama's tune. Whether it's a death march or a march to freedom can only be told once we get there.
I say let it play out. If the Democrats are correct well good for everyone. If the Republicans are correct, well good for us right? But I will not jump into an ocean of sharks waiting to devour our right-wing skins because of what we believe in. I will however throw you a lifeline and try to pull you in so you may argue another topic another day.
I am a Republican and proud to be one.
Craig,
Thanks for your uplifting post. But the set the record straight, I'm not registered in any party, but I'm leaning toward the Libertarian party because it is based purely on the Constitution, which is the backbone of this Country. It is also conservative and founded on Christian principles. Both the Democrat and Republican parties are corrupt. But the Constitution is pure. Ron Paul is not a religious man, but he's behind the Constitution 100%. The Constitution is good for everyone.
I'm not afraid to fight sharks. When the liberals get confronted with their folly, they get funny and start losing their civility. I believe this State is heavily liberal because conservatism is at a disadvantaged from all the media sources and politicians that appeal to men's greed and selfishness. I mean, if one politician promises free this and free that in a bad economy, while the other pushes for fiscal responsibility, tightening our belts and making personal sacrifices, guess which politician will garner the most votes? That's why the Democratic party is so popular.
On the other hand, history tells us that when men have too much power, they abuse everyone. This is what the Republicans did to us in Hawaii awhile back when it was the party of the rich and powerful.
As I've maintained before, both parties in Washington are working for the same people. What the President and the Democrat controlled Congress have done is to fulfill exactly what the Republicans were doing in Hawaii a long time ago- which is to restore power to the government that's controlled by the elite. I've been trying to spread this message for awhile now. We need to stop fighting ourselves, which is what "they" want, and fight these Socialists on Capitol Hill.
You ask, "Is it a march to socialism"? My response to that question is to look at Obama's past, his associations, members of his cabinet and their affiliations, and you'll see that they are Leftists Socialists. Even his college buddies say he admired Carl Marx.
As far as jumping into a pool of sharks, liberals won't have an opportunity to change unless they're informed. I am providing them that opportunity.

Yes. And we know that governments are in the "business" of creating a crisis for profit and gain.
What does this have to do with our freedoms being ripped away? Imagine the government being able to decide who goes to which school, who get's a loan, who doesn't. If you're related to Senator so-and-so, or you donated to so-and-so's campaign, then sure, here's your loan. Go to Harvard and have a ball. Or, "Sorry, I know you got an A average, but it says here that you're a Christian. We're not loaning money to you radicals". Next!!!
Are you getting pissed yet? If not, you should be.
There is an interesting article in this week's issue of Newsweek Magazine, pg. 23 entitled "Socialism, Chicago Style" written by Howard Fineman. Yes, I know that Newsweek is a "liberal, leftie, pinko rag" but it does have some interesting articles.
