  • Waikiki dying

Circumstances put us in Waikiki for a "staycation..." this past weekend. Gotta say, the only "crowds" we encountered (and not very crowded at that) were standing around gawking at the tired assortment of variety acts on the mauka side of Kalakaua Avenue. Newspaper man, gold man, guy with his two daughters doing karaoke (no shame, or what?), a couple of steel drum guys, several (!) foot-massage-with-lotion people, break dancers, couple of preachers, baloon guy, etc. Went to the $$$$ restaurant where we always used to go (pre kids) for anniversaries ... maybe thirty tables in the place, only four occupied; server says they have had 8 servers on duty, going to four or possibly five this week, shop people leap up and trail you around the store, but MANY stores without any customers at all. Wow...

    Re: Waikiki dying . . .

I was in Waikiki for a concert on Sat. night and mentioned to the cabbie how crowded it was; that it was great to see so many people out and about. I figured it had more to do with the post-Kuhio Day celebrations than anything else. I have no idea about restaurants and retail but I was bumping into people right and left on Kalakaua. This was at 9:30p. The Royal Hawaiian theater holds 750 and it was almost full. Granted, I was in Waikiki for a small snippet of time so I can't speak for the entire week-end.

Nah...balloon guy hasn't been around that long! I actually auditioned him for a commercial a coupla weeks ago...otherwise I wouldn't have even known there was a balloon guy on Kalakaua! He's a single dad just trying to eek out a living in paradise.

              Re: Waikiki dying

As much as I support the sidewalk enteprenuers, I always avoid that section, if I'm EVER in Waikiki, which is rare. I can understand most complaints about the whole thing, it's pretty much a disgrace, but I'll give a 'tutusue' pass to balloon guy, I like balloons.

Is this supposed to be gallows humor? Marsland died a couple of years ago.

That's a big word, I'm not sure exactly what that means.

When I made the post, I did not know he died in 2007, until I looked it up.

I'm a supporter of Marsland and his tough stance on crime. I credit him in cleaning up Waikiki in the past. I know many were upset how he would arrest video store clerks for distribution of porn, but so what. Sure he had movtives for going after organized crime, again so what? One less bad guy on the street is better for all anyhow.

If Marsland is still around today in his prime, he would not put up with that BS. Waikiki would be cleaned up. And Chinatown too.

                            Too funny.

I've been away from the internet due to being busy in Waikiki!

                            Waikiki is alive and well.

Balloon man went to Ireland two weeks ago. It's Spring break and the the place is hopping. Waikiki is always busy with tourists from all over the world.
