I don't remember but my guess is probably not. Maybe they had "dirt" applied for the chase scene.

OK, thanks for correcting me on that. I told you folks, it was a long time ago and my memory on that one was not very clear. All I remember is the controversy and the sanctions slapped against the Univesity of Hawaii basketball program.

      Regarding the American Savings campaign....

Yeah, they were memorable but for me in an annoying kind of way. The commercials aired too often and were too silly.

On another note one of the worst local ad campaigns was the "Thumbs Up! Hawaii" fiasco from 1995.
      I'm still here. Are you?

Did anybody purchase in Pondarosa Pines after the seeing the commercial? The area looked like the Unibomber would live there.
PONDEROSA PINES? Ah, they had the kid, "Kalani," as the pitchman. That had to be over THIRTY YEARS ago. Kalani Dorean is his real name and he was the fullback on the Kaimuki HS football team.

Remember the home lots in Kona pitched by Jerry Asam? LAND IS THE BASIS OF ALL WEALTH was his motto.

Ahhh... Ponderosa Pines... I recall seeing those ads during Checkers&Pogo... and maybe during Gilligan's Island which ran right after (at 4 p.m.). The ads always seemed meloncholy and somewhat wistful, and I wondered why anyone would want to buy land there. I recall smoky scenes of deer-like wildlife and undertones of urgency mingled with vague desolation.

Wasn't the tag something along the lines of: "Call now, For sure!"

And I always sat there pondering "what the hell does that mean?"

How about the story of a 20 dollar bill?
How much Primo beer, Maui Wowee or Kauai Gold can you get with that amount back then while listening to Kalapana?

I know this commercial, because I was in it. This was the Honolulu Boy Choir performing with one or both of the Beamer Brothers. I don't remember it being lip-synched; I think it was live.

The commercial was for the Hawaii Dental Association.

If anyone has this, I'd really like to see it again - and confirm whether or not I was the kid over-emoting in my close-up.

If it was me, you need to cut me some slack - the director (Roy Hallman) REALLY emphasized that we perform with facial expression.

I think I have that commercial, finding it is the problem.

                      This was around 1981-82??

Yes, that's about right. I think it was filmed around 1979 or 1980.

We also did a Christmas commercial where we were holding candles. Don't remember the song - maybe "Caroling, Caroling"? I THINK it was for First Hawaiian Bank, not too sure. We filmed it in the evening at the Nuuanu Reservoir.

I almost lit the hair of the boy in front of me.

Were you in the Boy Choir during the filming of the Jim Nabor's Christmas in Hawaii special during the early 1980s? IIRC, that scene took place in a church on base at Pearl Harbor. Jim sang with the choir. There wasn't a dry eye on the set!

No, sorry, I think I was out of the choir by then - I left the summer of 1982.

One other TV memory - we did a TV Christmas special with Eddie Kamae & the Sons of Hawaii, probably around 1978 or so. We sung "I Love Christmas (Aloha Kalikimaka)" with them, and probably 1 or 2 more songs.

Okay, a few more, KGMB January 1982:

Russ Francis sitting on a horse on Parker Ranch (I think) for American Savings Bank

                              Pioneer Chicken with Phyllis Diller

Hawaii Credit Union League w/ Kimo Kahoano as a firedancer

                              Andy Bumatai for Mazda

                              The Gas Company

KGMB newsbreak with Bob Jones who mentions a beer drinkers nightmare story reported by Don Baker

Honolulu Datsun w/ Phil Arnone I think

                              The Krush for Kam Swapmeet

I don't think the location was Parker Ranch. AAMOF, I don't recall ever shooting outer island for ASB (was it American Savings and Loan then? Can't remember! ). Slowly that scene is surfacing in my tutu brain but it might take 'til tomorrow to remember the location! Most likely No. Shore, tho'. Kualoa Ranch makes sense but I don't recall if it was used for locations that long ago.
