View Full Version : HawaiiThreads NFL Pick'em!

I figure this will probably attract an even less-enthusiastic crowd than the rapidly-decreasing-in-popularity Hawaii Threads Trivia Game, but Manoasurfer123 and I both want to play, so if nobody else wants to jump in, it's totally fine. We'll be happy playing with ourselves. Or something like that.
There are a couple of nice prizes up for this one, too (donated by anonymous HTers who might or might not play), and you don't even have to know anything about football to play.
Each week, before the NFL games, I'll post the matchups. All you have to do is pick your winners, posting them as replies to this post. People who know little about the NFL will probably do best in the early weeks; there are surprises EVERY year, and the bozos who think they know football are always that last to buy-in on a come-from-nowhere team that makes the playoffs!
There are two ways to score: Either pick the most winners in a given week, or pick the most winners over the course of the season. At the end of the season, the winners will be the person who had the highest number of winning weeks and the person who had the overall cumulative highest number of winning picks.
Just pick your winners and you'll figure it out as we go along. And as I said: Manoa and I are totally happy just playing with ourselves, but it is more fun if others get on. Or something like that.
This week's matchups in the next post.
oh yeah, I almost forgot. The Monday Night game will be the weekly tie-breaker, so each week, post a predicted final score for that game only. For all the other games, just pick a winner. I'll go first, so you can see what I mean.
Are you ready for some football?

Indianapolis Colts at NY Giants (Indy no mo kickah)
Hah? Indy no mo kickah? The last I heard was that they were now the proud owners of a legendary, larger than life in New England, kicker who won three Super Bowls ( 2 directly, one by the point margin of three points he kicked) for the New England Patriots. Pat fans up this way are missing him big time...they aren't just yet sold on the Gostkowski kid from Memphis. Oh, BTW...the kicker's name: Adam Vinatieri..in my view the greatest clutch kicker, in any conditions, any weather, of all time!
I'll have my picks in by 6AM HST...I don't make my picks up until the last second...you never know who is going on injured lists!

Hah? Indy no mo kickah?
Indy got rid of that likkered-up kicker (Mike Vanderjagt, "the NFL's most accurate kicker"), and went with Vinatieri, who's now got a bum plant (leff) ankle. Das why I say they no mo kickah.
You are right, though, about the injury list. It might be good to wait, but I figgered my picks are pretty solid . . . well, mostly solid.

By virtue of his picking the Chargers to beat the Raiders in the tie-breaker, pzarquon is the winner of week 1! pzarquon and scrivener are tied for the cumulative lead.
pz, by the way, was the only one to correctly predict that Atlanta would beat Carolina, and he was the only one to correctly predict that New Orleans would beat Cleveland. Palama Kid's strategy of picking all the home teams, while usually not a bad idea, just didn't work out this time.
It's a good lesson: You don't have to know jack about football to play this game!

Palama Kid's strategy of picking all the home teams, while usually not a bad idea, just didn't work out this time.
Truss me, I realized that I picked only home teams - last night - during my review. I'll have you know that I used all of my prognostication skills and knowledge / history of the NFL to make my picks. They were cold calculated selections.
Now, on to this week's picks.
Carolina Panthers at Minnesota Vikings (CP has too many key offense / defense injuries)
Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins (Fish finally overcoming Ricky's defection)
NYGiants at Philadelphia Eagles (Eli's not coming)
NewOrleans Saints at GreenBay Packers (Bush not real; Favre is)
Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts (RBs have to produce more to make up for Edgerrins' loss, but Peyton's too good)
Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears (Dis could be anuddah shutout)
Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals (Johnson & Johnson: nuff sed)
TampaBay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons (Vick rules - great to watch, but I'm thankful they left the West years ago)
Oakland Raiders at Baltimore Ravens (Raiders' down year - fewer wins than 49ers)
Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks (AZ win last week was not impressive)
St.Louis Rams at SanFrancisco 49ers (Swept dem ewes last year - woo hoo !!)
Tennessee Titans at SanDiego Chargers (Bess of the AFC Wess)
NewEngland Patriots at NYJets (5-1/2 pt underdog, but gotta pick me some key upsets to get back into this game)
KansasCity Chiefs at Denver Broncos (One word for last week's loss to Rams: anomaly)
Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys (TO's circus catches vs Jags impressed me)
Monday Night Tie-Breaker: Pick Winner and Predict Score
Pittsburgh Steelers at Jacksonville Jaguars 23 - 21 (Pitt has half-Korean Hines, but doesn't have a "TO"; can't see Batch repeating his efficiency)
Yes, I took a hit last week. In fairness, we prognosticators can't be 100%, but four (4)!!??? Only consolation: dat was firss week.
So, I buried myself in my library to worry over the stats and injury lists & in combination with my vast NFL background, came up with my picks.

Uh...whoops.
I forgot about the freebie on Thursday night. I am the only one who picked Miami over the Steelers (Rothlisberger out, new QB in Miami, plus some good young talent with something to prove), so when I added up the scores, I just counted that pick wrong, which it was, but I also said it was a freebie.
So that puts me in an awkward position -- I would go back and correct scores for anyone else playing the game so that the freebie were accurately reflected, but in this case the only person it applies to is me, the person running the game.
Um.
I considered putting it up for discussion, but I'm pretty sure I know what the outcome of any debate would be. Fair's fair, and I did say Thursday's game was a freebie, and if I'm going to be impartial, that means exercising impartiality even when I'm the sole beneficiary. This is quite embarrassing, but I'm going to declare me the winner of Week 1, with 11 correct picks plus the freebie making 12.
Anyone wanna complain? Please feel free. This judge's decision is by no means final!

Somehow, Ryan knew ahead of time that Steve Smith was not going to play for Carolina or that Jurevicius would leave in the first quarter with a busted up rib. He has got an "in" somewhere.
If it is cool with everyone else, I am going to make my picks at the last possible minute, ergo the previously mentioned injury report and more importantly, to copy off of Ryan if he has any more insider information. :)
Scriv, I am cool with the vig as well. Your pool.

No way. No vig here, I swear.
Also, I know Palama Kid wasn't just picking home teams -- he was the only one who gave meaningful, thoughtful reasons for his picks! If it sounded like I didn't give you your props, I apologize!
The spirit of the freebie was to encourage participation up to as late as Sunday morning; ultimately, what it all came down to was that pz and I both picked 11 winners, and he got the tie-breaker. The best outcome is that he should be the winner of week 1; thus, my decision. I think we can all live with it! Especially since I'm going to come out on top at the end of the season anyway.

Scriv, I am cool with the vig as well. Your pool.
Vig! Short for vigorish. That's the first time I've seen anybody use that word in anything, other than Scrabble games! BTW, it's an excellent word to play when the board is really tight..especially around the time players are down to their last tiles to play.
Yo Scriv, in regards to your prognostication of your ultimate victory in the NFL Picks contest: It is no accident that I elected not to participate in the first round of this game. In the spirit of good sportsmanship, I chose to give every other contestant playing this game at least a fighting chance with a head start. Like most contests I enter into within Hawaii Threads, I win; that certainly gets boring after time for everybody. So to make this contest of NFL picks fair, I deferred my entry into the game until this week. It shouldn't affect the final outcome of the game though....come week 17 of the '06 NFL season, the other players in this game will learn, with no uncertainty, that Surfingfarmboy is a de facto synonym for champion. ;)

After seeing them in person go scoreless against SD I can't imagine them scoring on Baltimore.
I've been in severe depression since Monday night. The team has issues.

Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts Indy
Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears Chicago
Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals Cincy
TampaBay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons Atlanta
Oakland Raiders at Baltimore Ravens Baltimore
Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks Seattle
St.Louis Rams at SanFrancisco 49ers St. Louis ( If I can't pick the Raiders to win then I gotta pick SF to lose)
Tennessee Titans at SanDiego Chargers SD

Here are my picks, with a few comments:
Carolina Panthers at Minnesota Vikings
Carolina's loss to the Falcons was a fluke; the Panthers are still the team to beat in the NFC South. The Vikings are coming on strong, but this is a transition year for them. I love Brad Johnson, but he is not the answer.
Buffalo Bills at Miami Dolphins
I still think Miami should have beaten Pittsburgh last week. The Bills looked good, but I'm impressed with what the Dolphins did.
NYGiants at Philadelphia Eagles
Game of the week and a total coin-toss. I'll go with the team with a real running back.
NewOrleans Saints at GreenBay Packers
Two teams that will probably stink this year, but when Favre gets knocked on his butt, he usually bounces up and smacks someone in the face.
Houston Texans at Indianapolis Colts
We're not playing with "confidence points" in this game, but if we were, this would be my high-point game.
Detroit Lions at Chicago Bears
I really, really want Kevin Jones to be the real deal, but against the Chicago D, nobody's really the real deal.
Cleveland Browns at Cincinnati Bengals
Chad Johnson: 150 yards and 2 TDs.
TampaBay Buccaneers at Atlanta Falcons
As much as I dislike this Atlanta team, I have to take them against Tampa.
Oakland Raiders at Baltimore Ravens
There's no way the Raiders are as bad as they showed last week, but I don't think Baltimore's as good as they looked last week. I'm going with the Raiders in an upset.
Arizona Cardinals at Seattle Seahawks
Two teams that have me scratching my head after week 1. When in doubt, take the team with the best running back, and this game features the second-best running back in the NFL.
St.Louis Rams at SanFrancisco 49ers
This is going to be the game that makes Frank Gore a household name.
Tennessee Titans at SanDiego Chargers
Ride the hot hand until it burns you.
NewEngland Patriots at NYJets
This is another one that's tough to pick; Pennington looks to be back to his old self. Anything can happen when these two teams meet up -- you can toss last week out the window and just flip a coin. Mine landed on the Patriots.
KansasCity Chiefs at Denver Broncos
Here's what I don't get: Everyone's saying the Chiefs are easy pickings without a quarterback, but the Chargers don't really have a quarterback and look what they did last week! LJ is no LT, but he's close enough for this game.
Washington Redskins at Dallas Cowboys
Clinton Portis: Out in early second quarter. Mike Anderson: 2 TDs.
Monday Night Tie-Breaker: Pick Winner and Predict Score
Pittsburgh Steelers 23 at Jacksonville Jaguars 26
Oh, I soooooooo want to pick the Jags here, especially with Fred Taylor still healthy (not that that will last very long). Leftwich vs. Batch tells me to take the Jags; Leftwich vs. Rothlisberger tells me to take the Steelers. Count on the Jags to score at least a few points in some unconventional way (safety, blocked kick, interception return). Wait; I think I just convinced myself.
I have no faith in this week's picks, which is why it's taken me so long to post them. What a weird Week 2 this is.

Niners & Raiders fans don't bet with logic - they bet with love (and sometimes desperation), they bet on faith - but never logic :D and I say this as a very, very longtime Niners fan. I could never bring myself to bet against my team - even if it meant losing $$$. and the last few seasons, it's been very hard to be a Niners fan & still hold my head up.

I'm also a longtime 49er fan of over 50 years since the days of Leo "the Lion" Nomellini, who was a pro wrestler during the off-season. I'm at 13-2 this week after picking both my 'Niners and the hated Cowboys. The SF pick was sentimental (I'm still not convinced about qb Alex Smith) and Dallas was at home vs. the 'Skins. And, Manoa and I both picked Jacksonville (GO CHAD, GO!) for MNF.

Well - you've got me beat there. I've only been a fan for about 30 years. as for those hated Dallas guys - I used to have a t-shirt with a diagram of "The Play" on the front. and I also had a t-shirt that LOOKED like an official Dallas shirt til you got up close and it said in bold letters: F*** Dallas. My boss in SF bought it for me. I was lucky enough to live there for 4 of the 5 super bowl victories - anyone who has lived in a super bowl winning team's hometown can tell you - those were some parties in the streets!!!
Now, if the team "owner" John York will just loosen up the purse strings a bit more and learn to look at it as a sports franchise instead of just a business, we might have a chance (next season?) for another trophy. Maybe Little Eddie D. will have to take him out behind the barn & give him some Auntie Lynn Whack Whacks to get him in line but I have my hopes that if won't be long til we rise again.

Now, as I recall, Eddie, Jr. relinquished control of the team to his sister Denise York when he was subject to an investigation of financial dealings with Louisiana governor Edwin Edwards to establish riverboat casinos. Somewhere along the line, brother-in-law John York seized control as team "owner" and the 'Niners took a tumble. Will Eddie, Jr. ever regain control of the team?
Ah, those "glory years." SF is tied with Dallas and Pittsburgh with FIVE Super Bowl titles, but the 'Niners have never lost a Super Bowl game (the 'Boys have dropped three title games, the Steelers one).
I have a video tape of the 1981 NFC title game ("the Catch"). The picture's not great - my TV was on "rabbit ears" as there was no Oceanic Cable service in my area then. But, there's no denying the celebration in "Bahgdad by the Bay." Electric!

I remember being in a bar in the Marina District of SF on Super Bowl sunday #16 - after the game ended, I asked a friend "I wonder what would happen if I punched "God Bless America" on the jukebox"? well, I did it - there were people standing on the bar, leading the singing. You would think we had just solved all the world's problems with that one game! It was quite an experience. and yes, Niners are tied with other teams at 5 wins but as you say - we never lost a super bowl game. and that Lombardi Trophy is really large, silver, shiny & pretty :D
When I lived there, my neighbors & I got so depressed without football one year that we had a "playoff party" one weekend in June or July - replayed a tape of that NFC championship playoff game, leading up to SB #16. You would think we had never seen the game before - we cheered & yelled so much! The next weekend, we had a tailgate party & watched a tape of Super Bowl 16 - ahh, what fun that was!
I think Eddie D. has been banned for life - he also had to sell off the NHL team he owned - Pittsburgh Penguins. But, he is still "behind the scenes" with his sister & her uptight husband. I'm truly hoping that John York will loosen up this season & start being a sportsman instead of an accountant. I think we have great potential - maybe not this season as re-building is still ongoing but by next season? Who knows what can happen? But win or lose, I'm a diehard Niners fan for the rest of my life.

Well, I picked the 'Niners both weeks over Arizona and St. Louis. Both regarded by most pundits as "give-away bets," but guess what? 1-1, with the win over the Rams being oh, so sweet! I'm in this just for the fun of it, no more, no less. I don't engage in "P-sheets" or 6-5, anyway. Most weeks I'll be shooting for 15-1 tops, but who knows what happens on the field? Maybe, just maybe, Alex Smith will turn out to be the answer at QB, but SF has so many needs.
GO, 'NINERS!

September 18th, 2006, 12:32 PM
Manoa;
Forget tonight's game for now. It does not matter in our side bet.
The Bet- terms and conditions
The Winner is the person who has the highest cumulative games picked for the regular season. Since we tied last week, and we are tied now, and we both picked J-Ville, this week will be a push. We will use the official Scriv cumulative for the count. So right now, the counter is at zero.
All timing of picks must coincide with Scriv's rules.
We play that out till the end of regular season.
The person with the highest cumulative has to post the current week's picks by midnight Saturday.
The Prize. Since this is a BB, loser has to post avatar and sig of choice from the winner. Avatar and sig need to stay up for 30 days. Avatar and sig must be cool with Ryan.
What say you????? If you agree to these terms, simply quote me and say "agree"

What say you????? If you agree to these terms, simply quote me and say "agree"
Why do I have this sinking feeling that you already have an AVATAR chosen for me!
And since I'm not going to post my picks until the last second to keep "Copycats" from referring to my guesses... that rule won't really work.
(and I just can't see my signature ever reading something like...
Manoa loves the Raiders more than the Seahawks!)
(So NOPE... your conditions are to severe!)
nachodaddy
September 18th, 2006, 12:52 PM
Manoa;
"Why do I have this sinking feeling that you already have an AVATAR chosen for me!"
Why, yes, yes I do......it is called "motivation".
Let me help you with this.
"The person with the highest cumulative has to post the current week's picks by midnight Saturday."
That prevents the winner from copying the loser game for game............ For example if I get one up on you, all I have to do is copy you, game for game, until the end of the season where I still be one up from you. This rule prevents this..........
We can add a rule stating that once picks have been posted, it cannot be changed if you prefer............
So.... here I explained it, showing how it can be fair to both parties.......there must be something else holding you back......don't let fear be your motivator.....rise above, bro. Don't be scared.
:)

Loser has to use the signature of the others choice for the losing week....

OK Manoa;
I am a reasonable man. We go by Scriv's rules and Scriv's official count only. That means we take into account tie breakers (tonight's game for example is "on").
Sig goes up by midnight Tuesday, goes down by midnight Tuesday the next week.
No avatars, just sigs.
Please quote and type "agree"

Week 2 Results!
As we all know from nachodaddy's and manoasurfer123's trash-talk, they tied for the number of correct predictions with an AMAZING 14 of 16! What you might not know is that they are joined by OceanPacific, also with 14. All three of our leaders picked Jacksonville to beat Pittsburgh, but NOBODY thought it would be such a low-scoring affair. The tie-break decides that nachodaddy, whose predicted score was closest in that game, is our Week 2 winner!
In the cumulative game, nachodaddy and manoa vault into the lead with 24. pzarquon and oceanpacific are next with 23, followed by scrivener, timkona, and extrascoop with 21.
If you'd like to see the exact picks and results for either this week or last week, check out this web site (http://nfl2006.mitchellkdwyer.net) I set up just for the pick'em! I'll put a cumulative thing up there when I get it looking a little more pleasing to the eye.

Hooo whee . . . this week's is more difficult. My prognostication skills must be deteriorating. But after some time consuming deliberations, here are my picks:
Washington Redskins at Houston Texans (Redskin defense will smack down Texans' offense)
NY Jets at Buffalo Bills (Chad continues big comeback)
Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions (Last week showed Favre is still Favre)
Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts (Defense shored up, then rushing wins this game)
Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings (Absolutely zero chance for upset)
Tennessee Titans at Miami Dolphins (Miami by 11? NO WAY. With no protection, Culpepper disappoints again)
Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers (Bengals really hurting, but playoff game nightmare not forgotten)
Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers (Peppers will be sorely missed; however, coach's special-teams trick plays are out - so CP wins)
Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns (Browns' lack of rushing attack will hurt them)
NY Giants at Seattle Seahawks (Surprise !!! Eli's for real)
St. Louis Rams at Arizona Cardinals (SL offense will show drastic improvement)
Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers (This Niner fan sez Eagles won't let up this week; SF improved pass defense not enough against McNabb)
Denver Broncos at New England Patriots (Upset key: Elam)
Monday Night Tie-Breaker:
Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints 33-31 (Brees will get his stats, but can't save them this week)

I wonder if there ever was a regular season weekend, in the NFL, when every visiting team won? The odds of that occuring now, with 14-16 games played every weekend, seem pretty remote. There's always a first time though. Another thought: I wonder what a Vegas book would pay (on the dollar) on a provisional where one bets all visiting teams win on a weekend, straight up?

If Vegas ever put out a line for "all-visitors winning," there would be takers for such a bet.
Something like 66,000:1, assuming all teams are equal. But, since they wouldn't be, the Texans visiting the Seahawks should supposedly increase the payout.
People will gamble on just about anything. Some of my friends make bets on what kind of play will result in the first first-down of the game (run, pass, or penalty).

You might want to take that blindfold off next time you are throwing darts, you might actually hit something. :)
That is change #3 if I am correct.

If Manoa is so concerned about being able to change his picks, I'd like to politely recommend he make all the changes he wants to a list he keeps on his computer, and that he just submit his picks once just before the deadline. Less chance of someone "stealing" his oh-so-insightful picks, and less annoyance for the rest of us.

Washington Redskins at Houston Texans Skins need wins to compete in the toughest division in NFL.
NY Jets at Buffalo Bills Bills at home. Winter is early.
Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions Favre aint dead yet.
Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts Manning faces first REAL defense. Jags comin off big MNF win.
Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings Viks beat Panthers last week but Chicago is top 5 team right now.
Tennessee Titans at Miami Dolphins Culpepper due for a breakout game.
Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers Im goin with my gut on this one. Bengals got BIG O talent.
Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers All pirates in the NFL suck this year.
Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns Ravens are tuned and nearly injury free.
NY Giants at Seattle Seahawks Manning the 2nd coming into his own lately.
St. Louis Rams at Arizona Cardinals Who cares?
Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers Eagles are still stinging from last week. Bet they got fire-belly.
Denver Broncos at New England Patriots Snow in the forecast?

Atlanta Falcons at New Orleans Saints U2 opens, and then Bush gets 200+ multi-yards.

Denver Broncos at New England Patriots Snow in the forecast?
Patriot fans only wish...they have some really good memories of battles won in snowstorms. The "Snow Bowl", (the Brady "tuck" game), against the Raiders in the '01 season playoffs comes to mind most frequently around here. Great game...though I remember I was pulling for the Raiders to win that one. I thought the Raiders played magnificently in the conditions of that game...here was a warm weather California team, playing in a freezing blizzard, and if it wasn't for that questionable non-turnover call, I felt they would have won.
I believe the weather for the game this Sunday should be fairly warm. The last I heard, Sunday (during the day) will be in the low 80s, somewhat humid, with a front passing through around late afternoon bringing showers (which should end by game time) and game-time temp. in the upper 60s to low 70s.
Denver has had the Pats number of late; the Broncos have beaten the Pats 4 out of their last 5 meetings. (Remember when Ashley Lelie finished off the Pats in '02 with a first down catch in the 4th to seal that game in Foxboro?) Needless to say, the Boston sports talk radio stations have made this very clear the last few days. The Denver-NE game ought to be a great chess match between two masters of the game...Shanahan vs. Belichick.

Washington Redskins at Houston Texans
This is a tough one to call, but it comes down to Houston's once-fearsome ground game not being so fearsome. Can you tell I'm big on running backs?
NY Jets at Buffalo Bills
Buffalo has been surprising, and the AFC East is one of a few divisions where intra-division matchups can always go either way; however, Chad Pennington looks really good.
Green Bay Packers at Detroit Lions
Jacksonville Jaguars at Indianapolis Colts
Chicago Bears at Minnesota Vikings
Tennessee Titans at Miami Dolphins
My third week in a row riding the Dolphins. I'm such an idiot.
Cincinnati Bengals at Pittsburgh Steelers
My against-all-reason pick.
Carolina Panthers at Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Baltimore Ravens at Cleveland Browns
NY Giants at Seattle Seahawks
I'm such a big Tiki Barber fan that I can't seem to pick against him, even though his triplet brother is the other team's running back.
St. Louis Rams at Arizona Cardinals
Oh, I'd love to see Kurt Warner kick his old team's butt.
Philadelphia Eagles at San Francisco 49ers
I said last week's SF game would make Frank Gore a household name; it didn't. But only because the media doesn't talk about the 49ers very much. Keep an eye on this future Pro-Bowl rb.
Denver Broncos at New England Patriots
Not a difficult pick at all.
Monday Night Tie-Breaker: Pick winner and predict score!
Atlanta Falcons 27 at New Orleans Saints 17
I'm predicting a shootout with lots of yardage but just an average score.
Keep in mind that I may change my picks before 6:00 tomorrow. I'm thinking of taking the Patriots over the Eagles instead of over the Broncos.

This is a really tough week, really tough. Had to find inspiration under the lights last night..........
Washington Redskins- two words: Chris Cooley
Buffalo Bills- Buff at home, that dismal, unforsaken home
Detroit Lions- I love Favre but he should have retired last year
Indianapolis Colts- Colts score first, J'ville won't be able to keep up
Minnesota Vikings- home at the dome will help the D, journeyman Johnson will get the offense going
Miami Dolphins- this is the week the O line clicks and Dante throws with confidence
Pittsburgh Steelers- injuries to Cincy and Cowher's wrath
Carolina Panthers- the return of Steve Smith
Cleveland Browns- my upset pick- another game settled by a field goal
Seattle Seahawks- this game will also be settled by a field goal
Arizona Cardinals- SL beats Denver, loses to SF, hard to tell what they are going to do next......
Philadelphia Eagles- NFC East versus the rest of the league- pick NFC East first and vassilate from there........
Denver Broncos- Lynch puts someone on a stretcher in this game. TE for NE can't neutralize him
Monday Night Tie-Breaker
Atlanta Falcons 30-24 finally some points on Monday night!!!! Atlanta with the lead option and NO with the Katrina hype and Bush.

About the Monday Night Tie-Breaker:
So far, both weeks' winners have been determined by the tie-break, so I thought I'd explain it.
If participants have tied scores after all games have been played including the Monday night game, the winner will be determined in this order.
The participant who picks the winning Monday night team wins if none of the other tied participants have also picked the winning team.
If more than one of the tied participants have picked Monday's winner, the participant who comes closest to predicting the margin of victory wins the tie-break.
If there is a tie in predicting the margin of victory, the participant who comes closest to predicting the total points scored wins the tie-break.
I am not sure, but I believe that in order for the game to remain tied at this point, the tied participants must have predicted the same winner and the same final score. Taking inspiration from the Honolulu Zoom game, I will take jan-ken-po (rock-paper-scissors) submissions from the tied participants until someone emerges victorious. If I happen to be one of them, a neutral third party will be agreed upon to referee the jan-ken-po.

Surfingfarmboy
September 26th, 2006, 11:52 PM
In regards to all of the visiting teams being chosen as potential winners: It looks as if, maybe, the NFL has achieved its goal of parity..the "On Any Given Sunday" thing. Relative parity anyway. Obviously, the Houston Texans are not quite on the same playing level as the Seattle Seahawks, but....on any given Sunday..you know how it goes...Houston could (in theory) surprise Seattle.
The NFL is simply the most competitive sporting league, with the most talented athletes, in the USA. The evident demise of the "home field advantage", with the relative parity among all the franchises, clearly demonstrates this.

That is FUNNY. Did not even look at yours.........
No such thing as a tie..........the devil is in the details. We follow Scriv's rules for a tiebreaker. In order.
And, OBTW, your sig goes dark Sunday afternoon, regardless of the outcome of this week. New week, new bet.

Nacho... the coincidences that we posted the same is irritating me...especially when i've been choosing pics first!
I will be changing at least one of my picks... just cause I can't handle us being that closely aligned!
Ugh! Good thing you never wanted your initial bet which was the season long one... you would have a lot of catch up to do!

This message is hidden because manoasurfer123 is on your ignore list. There are few happier words in the English language than these... nevertheless, even spared the actual content, I can see this thread continues to be Manoa'd.
If you're bickering about your 'side bet,' why not keep it on the side? You know, via Private Message? This is the HawaiiThreads NFL Pick'em game, not the Watch Manoa Change His Picks and Bicker game. Sheesh.

About the replications one choosing winners identical to the picks of others: While I hope I do not pick a line-up of winners that matches another participant's team for team, it could potentially (and probably will) happen. I make my picks independent from any information that has posted in this thread..in fact I try to avoid looking at picks from other players (other than the MNF game) to avoid the replication thing, as well as to make picks based on my own intuition and not to be swayed by what I read from others.
In a game where winners and losers are determined by straight-up winning and no spread with contend with, there is bound to be replication among the picks, especially toward the latter half of the season when the overall trend of what teams are winners and what teams are losers has been established. Like previously mentioned though, there is no exact replication of any picks in this game due the MNF factor.
I'm not sure anybody would want to replicate my picks at this point in the game. I've kinda struggled so far. I feel pretty good about my picks for this week though, which I will be posting soon before the deadline.

Indianapolis Colts (Peyton Manning goes for 2 wins in Big Apple this year)
Carolina Panthers
Minnesota Vikings
Atlanta Falcons

Kansas City Chiefs
Dallas Cowboys
St. Louis Rams
Jacksonville Jaguars
Oakland Raiders (This might be the Raiders best chance at a victory in '06)
Cincinnati Bengals (Johnson, Henry, and Houshmanzadeh too much for NE secondary to handle)

Indianapolis Colts at NY Jets
Jets on a roll, but Colts on a better roll.
New Orleans Saints at Carolina Panthers
I'm not a believer.
Minnesota Vikings at Buffalo Bills
Bills could be this year's surprise team.
Arizona Cardinals at Atlanta Falcons
Falcons embarrassed last week; look for huge rebound this week.
San Diego Chargers at Baltimore Ravens
Tough game to call; I usually take the better running back, but in this case I'm going with the better D against inexperienced QB.
Miami Dolphins at Houston Texans
I don't think the Texans are as bad as they've been, but I really like the Culpepper-led 'Phins!
San Francisco 49ers at Kansas City Chiefs
Oh, I'm so tempted to take the niners here. I'm going with LJ at home.
