Some friends of mine poked their heads into the Next Door space last Wednesday night and said it still looked ridiculously far from being ready to host the Cinema Paradise festival only two nights later. Has anyone checked it out since then? I'm curious.

I hope the new businesses opening up in Chinatown will all make it. My personal experience having being born and raised in the area...Nada's! :p The new furniture store that recently opened up with "different artworks" is not new. On Nuuanu there is "different and creative artwork" too. They say they spent in excess of $150.000

"Next Door" estimates they spent $ 300.000. Indigo's, I don't know how much. The Mexican Resturant seems to be doing well (different and better landlord, Alan) but people are grumbling that the food prices are a bit high. All and good and I wish them all well. If they got money to burn, time on their hand and can put up with "Christy" whose mother owns the building. Then fine and dandy. Their rent must be ridiculous. Tenant after tenant have gone bankrupt renting from her. Not only paying their own insurance but everything else for a bussiness in Hawaii. The now defunct Kaspy's which was Mr. C's was rented out for $ 5,000+, insurance, utilitities, $4,000, etc. etc. Both bussiness closed within six months. Great ideas, great beginnings, people just stopped coming.

Why? Chinatown is the mecca of Drug Activities. It is so apparent during either day or night. Mel's Video is across the street where druggies go to smoke their dope and come out holding the walls or staring into space. Parking is rough. The back streets are more infected with Drug Dealers and Drug Users. One of the owners of the furniture store said on the news the other night that they didn't want to take away the feel of the area...duh? He must know something I don't or he is a bit away from reality than me.

Like I stated earlier somewhere at hawaiithreads.com, Chinatown is Chinatown. To much promises to clean it up and never happened. If these businesses will generate law enforcement to finally clean up the area...go for it. The amount of money they spent warrants some kind of interest from HPD, FBI, and DEA. Oh, just another tid bit of information...The building that Next Door will be was once confiscated by the FBI and Christy almost lost it. Personally, I think she should have. She's a crook!

If any of you want to check out the new businesses and also the other arts and cultural events in Chinatown, this Friday supposed to be First Friday where doors are opened late so others not of the area can visit and see what's happening. Some of the Art places showcase music entertainment and light pupus. This would be a great time to visit Next Door and the Furniture/Art Store that recently opened up. Yeah right!

Anyways, if anybody is interested for a night tour of Chinatown...to see it from another perspective let me know by PM. I guarantee a tour you would remember and never forget. Fee: No charge. Community Service

Auntie Pupule

PS. I have to check if this Friday is actually the First Friday Celebrations...sometimes they hold it on the second Friday.

i worked on HUFF with sergio and chris, back in the day, and have limited involvement with CP...if the past is any indication, the two with pull off the event despite flirting with deadline disaster...these kinds of indie events are logistical behemoths...i'm sure it was exciting, but they'll pull it off well...

Good morning AbsolutChaos! That's a great line up of entertainment. Have fun. Me, I'm going to Chinatown. I need to update information for my blog about the other community that exists. Also, I'm in the process of asking many of the homeless women in Chinatown on their stories and how they got to be in the situation their in...again for my blog. That won't take one night. It's an ongoing thing like the other community.

So, I'll be lurking in Chinatown. Visiting, walking around, drinking and causing havoc like I always do. Reputation as Aunty Lynn of Chinatown! nah, I've changed...not that mean and Bitchy! Not!

As for August's First Friday: It's a go! ;)

Chinatown’s First Friday was a success for everyone last night. Every business was busy! I got off at my regular bus stop on Smith and Hotel. There was a line to go upstairs at 39 Hotel (name of business). The bouncer, Sol stands wearing a black t-shirt watching for any trouble that is brewing…yet, the bar is upstairs. Sol used to be the bouncer for Kaspys which is now Bar 35. I ask him which one was better? He told me Kaspy’s didn’t pay him his last two checks. This one he gets paid regularly.

At night, there's a lot of people venturing into the place to dance to the sounds of DJ!!!! Out of the three new bar's...35 N. Hotel seems to be the more elite crowd, my personal opionion. LOL

dayum. was hoping it wouldn't degenerate to where I usually take da conversation....
Why do you consider breaking wind as a degeneration? It's a natural born universal ting that peoples of da world all have in common dat is da source of huge amounts of laughter (why is that?) no matter which foreign oral language you may speak. I can break wind in China, and people will laugh. I can break wind in da Pygmy nations and da Pygmies will laugh, although they might go into shock at first, but then they will pick themselves off da ground and they will laugh!

kimo55
August 7th, 2005, 10:37 PM
>Why do you consider breaking wind as a degeneration?

gawd. haveta splain erryting to da keeds...
"breaking wind" in and of itself is not a degeneration.
the conversation, itSELF degenerates... when scatology rears its ugly uh... head.
In conversation, it is commonly known as degenerating.
in pygmy culcha and otherwise.

>...dat is da source of huge amounts of laughter (why is that?)

well, some are easily entertained... by the infantile.

> I can break wind in China, and people will laugh.

Not so. But, you may be considered rude. and kids may laugh. and you may feel fulfilled. and some adults may think to themselves that some hopefully may aspire to a "higher" level of amusement...

>I can break wind in da Pygmy nations and da Pygmies will laugh, go into shock then they will pick themselves off da ground and they will laugh!

then they will eat you. after you release da methane.

Actually, the corner is Amy's Place. Swing Video was two doors down where the famous Swing Club was. She was evicted and then set up shop on Kapiolani Blvd. where they continued their activities. She kept the "Swing" name despite the owner's approval of the original Swing Club.

I been to "Next Door" at the last film festival. Its not bad. They have regular chairs so its ok as far as seating. The screen was at a higher angle so it may not be to everyone's liking.

The bathroom is not sectioned off completely so you can hear the toilets flush. I could smell someone smoking during the screening and later I noticed a person smoking in the bathroom.

These aren't really complaints but just stuff I notice. Some folks will not like it though.

Aloha Everyone! It's Valentine's Month and First Friday in Chinatown tonight! Should be quite interesting with lots of merchandise to get your special someone a gift for Valentines Day!

The nightclubs are becoming more packed. I ventured in Bar35 and Next Door on Chinese News Years. Bar35 goes all the way in the back with a beautiful Patio Bar. The decor and seating is relaxing. The Doormen at Bar35 is handsome! :p

Next Door is watched by Big Bouncers so theres no problem with security.heheheh The place is quite the opposite of Bar35 with a style all it's own. Laid back and rocking just the same.

Upstairs -- uh, I dunno. Kinda like a Punk Rock Place. By the time I walked up...I was to tired to look around.

Anyways, I'm going tonight to get a more detailed review of the places. If I can get away from "my" stomping grounds. And if I can remain sober.

I think it's not "Let out of the bag" enough, but Chinatown IS where the artists of today are making a mark. And by mark I don't mean 'tag'. I know of the other problems with that area, but in most cities, it's the other non-mainstream areas that the artists get to shine, as it seams to be there. True?

Once again, I say it's a once or twice a month affair.

Hopefully, things will get better. Hopefully, the economy will improve. Hopefully, people will appreciate and value ART.

Once again First Friday was a success! The shooting that occurred this past week didn't stop the people from coming to venture into Chinatown/Downtown! :D

The streets were bustling with eager and happy people. All going in and out of the various arts, craft, nightclubs, bars and eatries. The lines to go into Bar35 and Next Door - something to behold. HPD Officers had to remind those on the sidewalks waiting to get in to make room for those passing by.

On Nuuanu and Pauahi, lines just the same for the various Arts Galleries and Marks Garage. Yep! First Friday is a success!

As for me...I went all ova. Visiting friends and talking story. My last stop was Next Door. Chris the owner and girlfriend Lacy bought me a drink. :) The place was packed once again. Everyone dancing and being friendly. It was hard to walk through the crowd to get back outside.

I left First Friday early. I getting old. The younger crowd has more energy than me thats for sure.

HPD Officers had to remind those on the sidewalks waiting to get in to make room for those passing by.
wish they would pay almost as much attention to the crowds fully blocking the sidewalks on Kalakaua watching the street 'performers". Of Course, it's the sacred cow that can't be touched; "touriststssss"

Mahalo, Auntie! The day's been awesome so far. Pretty soon I'm out to lunch with my mommy and then an afternoon of shopping!

I got a message on MySpace about Next Door's 1st Anniversary party happening tonight. Looks like we'll be there too!
