Well, I have a teen (condolences welcome)...
I'm just bracing for the "Dad, I want a tattoo" speech.
Or worse: "Dad, check out my new tattoo..."

Anyone here got one? Or are covered with them?

When my daughter was 16, she asked for a tattoo for her birthday. Yikes! Anyway, after a few discussions, we decided that she could have one provided I get final say on the design. I didn't want her getting an ugly home-made version so I took her to a tattoo shop where they used sterilized equipment. We chose a pretty vine design with her name to resemble an anklet. It's something she won't regret getting when she's in her 30's.

The thing is, if they want it bad enough, they'll get it with or without your knowledge or approval. Sometimes it's better to compromise.

I'm a senior citizen recently retired and I've been wanting a tatoo too! My family thinks it's a very BAD idea. I told them I'd want to have my last name done in a character...Kanji. Any suggestions where to go to get one done?

Don't have any. (Getting one ear pierced was my only brave expedition into that kind of territory and I don't wear the ring anymore.)

But I like them. I especially like the armband or anklet designs.

Well, I have a son, the middle one, who got a tatoo. He hasn't showed it to me or even told me about it. My youngest son told me about it.

He's in the air force and got the air force insignia. Like I said I haven't seen it but he's of age and can do what he wants with his body. He already proved this without my consent. I hope he won't regret it later on in life.

People often get on a freak-out about tattoos, for what reason I know not. I waited five years to get mine, being absolutely sure of what I wanted on me for the rest of my life. It means a lot to me. A friend of mine (who works at a very respectable shop) did it for me, and did a hell of a job. The only thing keeping me from getting more is a lack of funds.

It's an art form when done by the right person. And it takes a tremendous amount of upkeep. No sun, constant lotion application, and all that. People weep about "oh think about when you're 70," and I'm like, "either I'll be dead, or my skin will be as white as it is now."

A good tattoo is fine art, and should be respected as such.

I've always wanted a nice, small discreet one. Something not obvious to passerby, but still noticeable to someone who knows me. However, I am the world's biggest baby and can't see doing it until they somehow come up with a way to make the process painless.

I admit it, though. I am a sexist. If my son wanted a tattoo, I think I'd be okay with it. But if my daughter wanted one? No. Freaking. Way.

Sorry to say, but the pain involved in a tattoo is one of the best parts of getting one. And it's not nearly as bad as some would expect. Some places I've had done felt like I was being cut by a knife, while others just felt like being scratched.

Pain isn't always a bad thing.

Pain isn't always a bad thing.

Heh. I'll keep that in mind when I'm in labor and they ask if I want an epidural. :)

The best tattoo I think I've ever seen is in the 90's remake ofRomeo & Juliet . Friar Lawrence has this really cool gothic cross on his back.

Personally, I like "Tribal" or "Polynesian design" tattoos such as this one (http://www.hawaiistories.com/gallery/album49/Cimg0049). He designed his own tattoos as well as tattoos for other guys on the ship.

I think he chose a honu because it's his name. The artwork has very intricate detailing and (according to Honu) it's not complete yet. Thanks for the compliment on the albums, I thought it was a good way to share the photos with ohana and friends back home. :)

I don't have one, nor want one. I do wonder why I never see any really COLORFUL ink. Technology has made so many advances in most areas, so why can't they invent colors that are distinct, & rich?

My second eldest boy wanted a tatoo, I told him he could get one after he left the house and is on his own and could pay for it himself. Otherwise he could get one now and at my expense if it said I love my Mom and Dad with cute little teddy bears hugging hearts. He said he can wait.

I know I replied to this thread some time ago but now my family has changed their minds...they don't mind if I got a tatoo, so I would need a suggestion for a place to go, and be honest about the PAIN...I still remember labor pains!

I had my original 3 tattoos done while still in high school. Totally unproffessional jobs  .My friend used a sharpened guitar E string guided through a pen body and driven by a small round 9 volt motor. All three were drawn by me and luckily turned out well enough. I have a pegusus on my chest and a sailboat on my back. The third was a little wizard smoking pakalolo on my right upper arm. Last year I drew a mountain with a path leading up it and had a tattoo artist bury the "old" man. Life is choices. Some we can change or cover up while others we can't, but what is done is done either way. Unless they come up with that time machine :D .

Thanks for another laugh Kimo. Your avatar would make a cool tattoo.

I have a small red heart on my left breast. I like it, but it is the only tattoo I will ever get. I do know about the pain though, it hurts so good. Some people get addicted to tattoos.

Comes hither a representative of the "hellnofrickenway" demographic. Both my husband and I are in the "at risk" category for tatoos (we are both Hawaiian, are of the retro-mana generation that started doing aumakua bands on men and women, etc, and nearly everyone around us has a tat of some sort). But nope; I no care if my sister, my mother and my grandmother each have tatoos (and they do). Don't care if my brother-in-laws and my sister-in-law and a variety of neices and nephews and the neighbors and the school teachers all have tats (and they do, too).

When I see a body with a tat here and there? All I can think of is "skin clutter". And both my husband and I told our kids the same thing: tatoos are artificial. Earn your stripes through whatever life bangs your way. Stretch marks from pregnancy or weight-lifting, burns on a skin due to some tragedy that you survive, surgery scars...these are the stuff that makes a body more beautiful, and are the marks that are more profound than any needle full of paint etching to some nifty design could ever be.

To each his own. Tatoos speak to artistic drama drawn upon a moment in time. Scars are a testament to survival.

(P.S. My eldest kid has mentioned getting tatoos before. My reply to all the kids would be to inquire how they would feel if I got a tatoo of two hands turning my knobs, the wrists of which would be evident whenever I choose to wear a v-neck...if you could just *see* their mortified faces upon such a suggestion...)

i toured in a band with a tattoo artist for years, but despite his best attempts, i never let him convince me to let him ink me...i knew what i wanted, but couldn't find anyone to draw it up just the way i wanted it...so now i have no tattoos...some people have tattoos and that's their thing...not having any is my thing...

being a skinny irish guy, i really don't have the arms to accommodate a tattoo...i was having drinks with a friend of mine one night, and she commented on the hot guy that was fully sleeved at the end of the bar...i told her that my arms are too skinny for tattoos and she said, "Oh, just get some muscles drawn on, then!"

Wow, I would love to have one - my family are currently putting together a family Hawaiian crest. I don't plan on having it put on me till later or after my career in Figure Bodybuilding http://home.comcast.net/~jjragilesjj/Pikake.JPG (http://home.comcast.net/~jjragilesjj/Pikake.JPG)

My husband has a few - his lastname, his initials on a scroll and his taurus.

oh yeah. And as they are in intermediate and high school, they gross out. ;) There is something to be said for parents who demonstrate that they are more pupule than their keiki will ever be. heh.

Ever heard of Tattoo Sleeves?
http://www.naturalexpressions.org/Tattoo_Sleeves_Shirts.html
printed directly on the sleeve fabric which is a machine-washable nylon. Sleeves come in pairs and are tapered which forms to the contours of your arm allowing them to stay up.
An interesting picture of a guy wearing one here:

They look real to me:o

I have none... yet.

I plan to get the Phoenix Rising on the small of my back. I plan to get a poem of mine on my rib cage toward my side. I plan to get paw prints in the sand tattooed on my neck (back/side). I've also been thinking about getting the phases of the moon down my spine.

My boyf just got his last name in Japanese Kana on his calf... it looks like somebody carved it into his leg... like a wound. Plenty more to come.

I <3 tattoos.

my suggestion on tattos would be to carry a picture of the tattoo you want around in a wallet/purse for a year or two. If you still like it as much as you did after that length of time... go for it. That's what I did with mine. Carried it for a year. Now it's on my arm.

I was 16 when I first wanted one...but I made myself wait until 21 no matter what so I would know I wanted it....Hmmm didn't want it then! Now I do but I am older and know what I want. Glad I waited:)

I carried a picture of my ex-girlfriend in my wallet for four years...I'm glad I didn't tatoo her name on my arm:eek:

I think if I ever get a tatoo, I'd like a barcode on my butt then I can tell anyone, "Go scan this ya stinkin bastard":D

I knew a guy in washington... he was a unique person and chose to get a tattoo of the bar code of "Wonder" White Bread on his arm (his favorite bread...)

Everytime he went to the grocery store and bought bread... you could litterally scan his arm!

Was too funny!
