Stupid is not fun or funny, and College is not a cure.
And a good mind is a terrible thing to waste.

I have often wondered if I am one of the posters sometimes put on ignore by a few, only to have them open my posts eventually to see what I wrote.
Wonder no more; I will admit to my own behavior.
Some time ago, I put a few posters (with whom I often disagreed or who caused me to find myself overheated) on "ignore" status - only to catch myself opening several of their posts anyway. I decided that I was being hypocritical by doing that, so I "un-ignored" (?) them. If I am truly in favor of civilized debate, I cannot participate in the electronic equivalent of sticking my fingers in my ears and going "la-la-laaaa."
I use the "ignore" function now only to block obvious spammers who contribute nothing else, such as "gregoahu," or those who are severely abusive, such as "aaa111" and "boowa" (both of whom ended up being banned anyway.)
I don't get the necessity of the ignore function. I have participated on internet boards for over a decade (old blue netscape navigator on a mac performa, with an external dial-up modem anyone? ) There have been plenty of opportunities for me to get pissed off at personal attacks; sullying my (imo) untarnished reputation, being surrounded by immature and ignorant spew.
But ah, even after getting p-ed off, I realize that from time to time, **I** needed the reality check, the paradigm shift, the passionate opportunity to look in the mirror. Those opportunities, even when it seems something as futile as fencing with trolls, are the very ones that will enable to me to see a new point of view.
I'll be damned if my pride get's in the way of my zest for learning. Nor shall I give up the gem of a lesson realized that the ability to apologize and concede is not a weakness.
Some of our most prolific writers here, even the asshole ones, make this place worth its while.
