Aunty may have a point here. Admin has been horribly quiet on this issue after several posts in recent weeks. Apparently he does not want to do anything to change the system, even though the people with "no" votes continue to lead those who support the reputation system.

I still hate it because of the anonymous nature of the system. It is a problem for many of these vBulletin board systems. No accountability and identification of your accusers, which is not the American way. You ought to know who your accusers and supporters are.

But then I guess that is the way the left leans.

That said, it is quite obvious that admin will not do anything to delete the system or let users opt out, which is an option that can be made available through the software.

So perhaps the next best thing is to zero out and bring EVERYONE to a 10 again at either the turn of the calendar year (which already passed) or at the anniversary date of the start of HawaiiThreads.

I still favor a complete deletion of the system. I will not ever post anything in the hot button issues and suggest that everyone concerned about being targeted for your opposing view in any of those threads, not post either, until the reputation system is dropped, or changed.

Newbies and conservatives should especially be aware of this.

That's the part that worries me. As much as I think the reputation system is more trouble than it's worth, AND even knowing that Mel & I are probably not occupying similar spaces on the political spectrum, I truly fear the feeling that he can be silenced because of the silly little gum things.

I've accepted that admin isn't likely to drop the reputation system, and I've accepted that it really doesn't mean squat, so I now treat it as fun and of as much value as the little plastic "fortune-telling" fish that I used to get at the fairgrounds when I was a kid.

Mel: DON'T BE SILENCED! I want to hear your voice; I want to be able to debate issues with you in a public forum; I want you to have every right to express a perspective foreign to mine. Your thoughts and opinions have great value --- and you just might surprise me from time to time, and I'll find myself in agreement after all.

It's a poll not a vote and would 54 people who took part in this poll so far is that fair assetment of the 1700+ active users of this forum?

This would be a bad idea, mainly because while everyone will have a score of 10 reputation points and their by their reputation bonus will be 0, they still have their bonus due to the amount of post and their amount of time on HawaiiThreads, that in of itself is enough to cause a negative reputation to be award and the recieving person will have a negative reputation score.

I don't think that is an option. And if it was it would be a global thing, everyone's green square would turn into magenta.

As I stated many times before, I just don't like how people can anonymously dock each other with red squares without having themselves ID'd. I'd rather have an identifiable post back to me in the public forum stating "I disagree with you because......" A red square just makes me frustrated... hence I feel why should I bother posting my opposing viewpoint to only get more anonymous red squares from people who do not want to be accountable to themselves or their fellow members.

I am participating on the other board Aunty has listed on her sig line, and will be posting a few more opinions on my own websites and Hawaii Metroblog where reputation points are not an issue.

1700+ active users? I don' t think so. I gather about 200 or so people are active here on a regular basis. What is the definition of active? Someone who posts everyday or someone who just accesses and lurks daily?

On resetting the rep system back to 10.

That is the whole point on resetting. A total cleansing, a new beginning, where prior points or time spent do not count at all. A redemption, renewal on a regular basis. If the rep system is a problem reset everyone back to "keiki".

But then I can understand why all "the pillars of the community" and other supporters of the rep system would hate to be reset. They'd all be in the general pool of the single square users and have to build their reputations all over again. If people think the rep system is not that big of a deal, why would they mind a reset?

To me the best system is to just get rid of the reputation system in its entirety. Look at the number of posts, pages and views in this topic alone. I am sure more people have accessed this topic, though many are probably reluctant to post or even take the poll... who knows?

I have friends who have accessed Hawaii Threads but who refuse to join due to the liberal slant of the board in the political topics. It is a good and maybe bad thing since the board does not get a diversity of opinions.

But for those with similar opinions, it is good for them too, because they can all rest assured that their fellow members will more or less continue to agree that Akaka is better than Case, or Bush is a bad man or whatever. It's a mutual admiration society and everyone in those threads can give each other more green rep points.

There are not too many of us conservatives for them to kick around, especially with the reputation system.

After all it is a numbers game.. more libs than conservatives will always keep the lib numbers and rep points higher than someone with the opposite opinion.

The lack of people with an opposite opinion will not mean the end of the board. This place is thriving as is. Look at how active this thread is... and all the eating threads are.

What we may have to worry about more are posts dealing with libelous statements... but that is fodder for another topic thread.

I wouldn't have a problem with a reputation reset, but am not sure what that would prove or accomplish. As I have said in the past, I don't really care much about my own reputation score, but I'll admit I have been flattered and slightly embarrassed by it.

And for the record (yet again), I would like to point out that I believe I am the most conservative participant on HT.

Not anymore. Stopped late last year. I never gave any during 2004 because I wasn't aware of the thing.

I would just love to have all of my rep points deleted and not be subjected to the forced participation in the reputation system at all. There is an option for us to OPT OUT as I have mentioned before. All it takes is ADMIN to activate the option and let everyone who wants out to opt out.

Those who want to play and build their green square counts, fine.

I want out of the rep system.

Since you are not awarding reputation to other users and don't plan to award reputation in the future then my advice is simply ignore the reputations that you recieve. No mater what score you have you still be able to post to HawaiiThreads and that's the important thing. So just post away and don't let one or two people get you down.
