i've never heard of kalanianaole highway. i thought halona cove was along kamehameha highway

Kalanianaole starts in Kahala, by the mall, where H-1 ends. It runs past Aina Haina, past Hawaii Kai, past Hanauma Bay, FHTEB, Halona Blowhole, Sandy Beach, past Makapuu (wave to Lurkah), through Waimanalo, and finally ends at Pali Highway and Castle Medical Center.
It's a beautiful drive!

it's a great hike up to the top of Koko Crater.

I agree, the view is fabulous but be sure you rest your weary legs before your descent because going down is a lot harder on the knees than going up. But like MM said the view make it all worth it.

Yes it is!
But this one though largest and IMO most beautiful gets visited the least.

When walking up the old road to the lighthouse, you'll come to an area with a sign about Humpback Whales. Find the trail that leads down the slope towards the ocean from there.
You'll see a few tidepools immediately, but after all the way down go to the left (north) a short ways and come to this! Enjoy!!!
