  • Re: Newscasters from long ago

Al worked for KHVH mostly, but did have a short stint at KGMB before he headed to the mainland and the rest they say is history. Amazing career he has had and when you couple the fact he worked for ABC locally and nationally for so many years, it is strange to see him on NBC.

Here's one I forgot to mention:

Chris Allen worked for KITV as sports anchor on the weekends (with Jim Scoutten and Diane Ryan), he also worked radio for KGU circa 1978-1980.

KHON during the mid 1970's had Pete Pepper on the news team with BJ Sams, Barbara Tanabe and Les Keiter. One photo I saw they all wore these bright red sports jackets, which reminded me of the jackets the ABC News staff wore during special events like the Olympics or something.

          Some more....

Channel 13 KIKU had Larry Zerkel and Ron Wood (no, not the Rolling Stones guitarist!) do short 5 minute newscast updates during the early 1980's.

Were those newcasts in between The Benny Hill show? That show was softcore porn before VCRs and HBO. Yakkity Yak!

Ron Wood as in the DJ who used to be on KKUA 690 AM I think.
              I'm still here. Are you?

Yes you both are correct, I have no idea what happened to Larry and Ron.

They did short 5 minute news updates about every 3 hours all day long, Benny Hill yes I think aired on KIKU during the early 80's, I have a ton of the shows on beta but you can buy the DVD's of the show, which was basically about old perverts chasing the skirts of young women. Some of the parodies were hilarious like Benny playing Willie Nelson, Kenny Rogers or even Dolly Parton. You either liked or didnt like Benny Hill.

Didn't Ron Wood do a late night show on KIKI back in the 70s? I remember Chris Allen very well. I bought his MGB when he moved to the mainland in 1976. I also took over his evening oldies show at KGU when he left and started the Jazz Show in that slot. I liked the guy, but sure am glad for the opportunity that came when he moved away.

From small kid time, radio voices sounded like Michael W.Perry, Mel Procter, Lou Richards, Chris Allen, and Ken Wilson. When they appeared on tv, they looked the same.

They all had dark brown hair?

I remember Lou when he was on that Archie Bunker spinoff, "Gloria".

If I remember right Chris Allen left KITV in 1980 and was replaced by Rick Quan.

If anyone knows where Chris Allen is today please contact me.

They all had the 1970's Anchorman's nice head of hair without the 'stache.

There were some anchorman and reporters who did have beard's or mustaches
back then (early 1980's too), some who come to mind, Doug Carlson, Jim Scoutten, Bart Fredo, Jack Wiers and Courtney Harrington.

What is Dan Cook doing these days?

He used to come to a few of our Thanksgiving parties in the late 80's-early 90's. The station manager he worked with (was it Phil Arnone?) was married to our family friend Michelle (the flight attendant who survived the Aloha Airlines tragedy where the roof ripped off), and invited Dan along as a guest. He was pretty cool and personable, an easy going guy who always had a smile.

I used to deliver Menehune Water to KHNL 13 in the late 80's when it was located off of Sand Island Access Road. Met Jim Leahi outside in the parking lot. He was getting off of his motorcycle, smiled and told me "So you're the menehune?" Rick Blangiardi seemed a little tyrannical with his employees whenever I brought the water bottles in. He sat in his big office and voiced his opinions loudly. Totally different persona from his UH telecast color games. Was he "the lord" of channel 13?
