  • Hawaiian Advice?

    Aloha!
I'm new to hawaiithreads - just looking for new ways to learn about Hawaii. It's my hope to move to the islands by July. I am from the south suburbs of Chicago... and let me tell you, I CAN'T WAIT to leave this weather behind !!

Truthfully, I don't know much about the feasibilty of moving. I understand that the cost of living is much more, but what are the other factors that I should be concerned with? My boyfriend and I will be making this move together, however.. I am the only person at the moment who will have a job opportunity. Wether it's good enough... I'm not sure. I work for The Home Depot here and I will be trying for a transfer soon. We are both full time college students, no kids, just our free spirits and burning hearts ... Josh has dreamed of moving to the Hawaiian Islands for years, this will be a big move for us.

We plan on paying for 6mons rent in full up front wherever we go, but that's just it... we don't know WHERE yet. We would like to be in an area that is close to school, work, shopping, etc... we aren't the partying types.. we don't drink or smoke - our intentions are purely those of good nature. We are both in our mid to late 20's. Josh has worked as a bartender/manager for 7-10yrs. He has a small job opportunity with a friend of a friend who lives in Maui. He's been in touch with a woman who owns several apartment units there who needs help painting.. she is willing to let Josh stay in one of her units for 600mo if he helps her paint. Josh grew up painting for his father's company, so he is knowledgeable and experienced there.

Where do college students live? What are the wages they make? What is the average cost for a decent place? We have so many questions.... &.. if anyone has an idea, how much does a specialist make at any of The Home Depot's in Hawaii,Maui,O'ahu, or Kauai??

    Hopefully Waiting...

    Re: Hawaiian Advise?

This is a little pet peeve of mine: you don't live "in" an island. You live "on" an island. So, saying someone lives IN Maui is like saying they live in a cave, underground. You can live IN say, Lahaina, but you are ON Maui.

Sorry, but this really bugs me with all of you folks who say you are moving here.

I believe this is where we say hi and welcome. Cannot answer your questions but I wouldn't pay anything upfront if I didn't have to. I believe a couple of young, sensible hardworking people can make it anywhere in the good ole USA, but some precautions are in order.

Anyway, not an old salt here, but I'd like to welcome you all the same.

Sorry anapuni808, a little "island illiterate" here. Didn't mean to offend anyone. I was looking at it as if Maui were a City.. I understand that you can't live "in" an island.
