While not vending machines in the traditional sense, the self-service checkout lanes found in the stores of a regional supermarket chain around (and perhaps at the self-service checkout lanes I've seen at Wal-Marts in Hawaii?) here will accept pennies. In fact, these lanes will accept any coin or currency, including the seldom seen anymore half-dollar coins, as well as $2 bills. I've done what you said you wouldn't mind doing many times while cashing out at this supermarket, and that's to use pennies in lieu of a larger denomination coin. It's a great way to spend accumulated pennies.
