I went to the Office of Professional Integrity and reported Hankison in 2008. When I told my dad I did, he scoffed, ‘that accomplishes nothing’ which I already knew because as one detective told my dad after several beers, ‘that’s where the dirtiest cops go to nap to wait for their pension.’ But I did know one thing, they had to keep a record of that report and if one thing is sure about a man who rapes women, they don’t stop until they are caught.
Eventually one of the women Hankison raped became a lawyer and she came forward. When she came forward, many others began to come forward about how Hankison had offered them a ride home when they were drunk and he raped them.
I told all of this to Roberto Ferdman of VICE news. That’s why he titled his fantastic piece on the Louisville Police ‘The Deal.’
When I saw Cosgrove, Mattingly and Hankison were involved with the murder of Breonna Taylor, all of those memories of my year and a half in hell came flooding back and I wanted Hankison to finally be punished for being the crooked rapist cop that he is.
He thought nothing of destroying lives because he is a pure psychopath. When his name became more public, more of his victims came forward.
When I learned that Barbara Whaley of the Attorney General’s office was going to prosecute Hankison for Wanton Endangerment I predicted correctly that she would not get a conviction because she is the prosecutor they send in to create the illusion of accountability. There was no chance she would get a conviction because the Republican Attorney General Cameron enjoys the patronage of the Fraternal Order of Police and he made sure the least charge possible was brought and that she would lose it. I said so before it happened because Kentucky is anything but predictably corrupt in every way.
So you can imagine dear reader the kind of satisfaction I am feeling living on the other side of the planet from my old Kentucky Home and seeing the mugshot of one serial rapist police officer Bret Hankison and a couple of his fellow officers for the lies they told that cost Breonna Taylor her life.
I hope I get the privilege of sending him prison letters from Thailand. It will give me a level of satisfaction that I can hardly describe. I intend to get even more proficient at salting wounds and I take this solemn vow that I will do everything possible to make his imprisonment as awful as it possibly can be because fuck that guy. Seeing this serial rapist behind bars is immensely satisfying for me.

“Thomas Clay.”
She went quiet. I saw her eyes tearing up. She began to tremble in fear. I saw terror in her eyes. I slowed down.
“What’s the matter?”
“Is your dad the attorney?”
I didn’t have to answer, she knew.
Alison owned a tanning salon. Her parents were well to do citizens and they took care of their beautiful daughter. Her salon was on Taylorsville road and her parents lived in Oldham County.
One night after she closed up, she was on her way to her parents house and just as she crossed the Oldham County line, she got pulled over by an Oldham County police officer. It was dark out and rainy.
“I don’t know why he pulled me over. I drive slow all the time and he never told me why he pulled me over.”
I knew the rest of the story before she told me what happened from her own lips. This cop pulled her out of the car and put her in handcuffs. He put her in the back of his squad car and got in the front where he proceeded to offer her ‘the deal.’ The ‘deal’ was that he could arrest her and take her to jail or she could have sex with the him and he’d let her go.
She scoffed in disgust. She didn’t know he was a monster.
She was wearing a skirt.
She was handcuffed.
He raped her in the back seat of his squad car.
Then he let her go.
When she got to her parents house, she told them what happened. They took her to the hospital where they did a rape kit on her. They also called the Oldham County police to report the rape.
Alison’s parents hired my dad to represent her. My dad was naturally horrified at this and he told Alison that he’d protect her.
Alison stayed at her parents’ home for several days. Her parents ran some business I can’t remember what it was. She was home alone when a man began knocking on her door. She said, ‘I didn’t think not to open the door. I just didn’t know.’ She is sobbing at this point.
The man at the door punched her so hard in the face that it crushed her orbital bone and broke her jaw. He told her if she testified that her parents would never find her body.
Her parents came home and found her unconscious. She was in intensive care for two weeks. She had to have her jaw wired shut and reconstructive surgery.
Alison became addicted to pain medication after she got out of the hospital. She was so scared that she did not want to pursue the case. Her parents were stringently against this. They wanted her to prosecute the cop.
When her doctors cut her off the pain meds, she started using street drugs. Before long, her addiction consumed her. Her parents wanting to help their daughter, cut her off financially. In desperation, she began selling her body to feed her addiction.
I’ve had few moments in my life where I felt like I had my soul ripped out of my body and beaten with a stick. When she cried, ‘he said he would protect me’ I fucking lost it. I felt like it was entirely my fault because when a Clay makes a promise, we will die trying to keep it.
Just as she said that to me, I passed Officer Bret Hankison and his scumbag partner Miles Cosgrove in their unmarked police car. They were going home after a police softball game. Both were St. Matthews police detectives at the time. They were off duty.
I passed them doing 90 mph probably and when they saw my personalized license plate TCLAYJR, they thought they’d get them some payback for my dad making their lives so miserable that they couldn’t get any overtime and such.
Alison was on supervised probation after she got a DUI. She had been given an ankle monitor but she cut it off. That made her an absconded felon at the time which is exactly the same as an escaped prisoner. She was going to go to jail no matter what because police have no discretion in arresting absconded felons.
As it happened, I had gone out to the gun range with my best friend and I had my pistol in my car. No worries because I had a Concealed Carry permit and being the upright citizen that I was, I told officer Hankison I had a the pistol as you are instructed to do in the CCDW classes and it was plainly visible.
I also had a bottle of prescription opioids on me in their bottle because I was a chronic pain patient from the brain tumor.
Alison did not have any ID at all and that was on purpose but it didn’t matter. Hankison knew who she was. They disappeared up into her room for a while as more cops showed up.
One of them was this big black detective who happened to be a linebacker for the U of L football team. He turned out to be a valuable friend later of my dad’s. Let’s call him Tyrone.
Ten years earlier, I was falsely arrested by the Oldham County police after my evil sister told them I was out waving my gun around after we were dividing my mom’s estate and things got heated. It was absurd and the charge was immediately dismissed but there was a record of me being arrested.
Hankison returned after some time to rejoin the party. Cosgrove told him I had a pistol and prescription pain medication. Officer Tyrone went to see my father 3 days after I was arrested and told him that Hankison and Cosgrove said, “Time to get some payback.” My dad didn’t mention this to me for over a year.
Hankison called the Kentucky State Police to see about suspending my concealed deadly weapons license which the lady who took his call did, retroactively. There was a log of this egregious violation of my rights and my father had to subpoena the head of the Kentucky State Police for that record and told him that he was going to make his life hell if he didn’t after stonewalling my attorney for that record for over a year.
My girlfriend’s plaster cast had left some white plaster of Paris on my carpet which Hankison wrote on his report was cocaine. Because I had a firearm with me, that got bumped up to trafficking in cocaine. The state police lab stonewalled the lab results proving it was plaster of Paris for a year and a half. When they finally released the results, the prosecution amended my charge to be trafficking in a simulated substance. It took a year and a half before all the charges were dismissed.
You cannot imagine the stress of being charged with crimes you did not commit simply because a dirty cop wanted to get some payback.
Hankison told me that if I would allow them to search my house and if it was clean, I would get a speeding ticket which was just bullshit. There was nothing in my house but some guns that he confiscated.
Hankison wrote my name as Thomas Clay instead of Thomas Clay Jr. on purpose so that when it appeared on the police blotter, it would look like my dad was arrested for trafficking in cocaine. The next morning, bright and early, all four news stations in Louisville called my dad to ask about his arrest for trafficking in cocaine. The local paper did as well. Let’s just say that he was not amused.
What was worse was that he thought I was guilty despite him coining the phrase ‘testilying’ early in his career about police officers who could not tell the truth on the stand. With me, he was always a prosecutor.
About two weeks after I got out of jail, we went to go see Alison at some house she was staying at where she was eager to tell me what happened to her that night.
Hankison took her up to her room and gave her the deal. She performed fellatio on him and he let an absconded felon go.
That’s when my girlfriend said that she was at a party once when Mr. Hankison showed up *when she was a minor* and offered her the deal as well. He was so fond of her that this happened other times.
I wanted to detesticalate Hankison. I wanted him desanguinated as soon as possible. I was insane with rage.
I went to the crimes against children unit and spoke to this very polite and professional detective. I told her what happened to both of these women and she asked me if I could get my girlfriend to give a statement? Which was utterly absurd after her seeing what happened to her bestie having her face caved in so bad she needed reconstructive surgery.
She told me very politely that she couldn’t do anything without a victim’s statement. As I was leaving she said in passing, ‘no I am not one of the ones cruising the Toy Tiger.’ It made me so much angrier because she knew what her cop brethren were doing there, they were raping the strippers there under the color of law and she couldn’t do anything about it because the victims would never come forward and participate in a system that had arrested them and been so brutal to them and the police officer who preyed on them knew it too. They laughed about it when they were regaling my father with their tales of the Toy Tiger.
