For some reason, I thought second cousins could marry but not first cousins due to incest laws but it does appear that it's ok to marry first cousins in Hawaii.

No, the two families weren't previously related. I was thinking more about oceanpacific's earlier comment about "double cousins", which is what my cousins on that side of the family are to each other.
