Do you know of any other links for big island real estate? Lahaina, were I grew up is not an option to move back. It changed for the worse long ago, ahhh but I have sweet memories of the west side of Maui though. I can see my old neighbor in my mind, Martin Paahanui getting into his red VW speeding off to play music at the old Maui Sheraton Hotel.
Not quite $350,000 but here's a home in Hawaiian Shores in Puna going for $295,000. With the money saved you can buy a nice SUV to fit in that driveway.

And that's not even in the $400,000 range where things get really nice here in Keaau

You can also do the 'little gass shack' or 'cabin in the woods' thing, and then get to do other stuffs with your $$$. It's all a matter of perspective.

About ten years or so ago, the former Mililani High boys' basketball coach sold his Mililani home and moved to the Big Island. With his equity, he was able to build his new home for cash - NO MORTGAGE! I think he moved to Mountain View or just beyond in Glenwood.

He kept his job at a construction supplier in Honolulu and commuted daily via a monthly airline pass, picking up the company truck parked at the airport lot. He said that even with the flying time, he usually got home for dinner on the Big Island faster than driving from downtown Honolulu to Mililani.

I know of a few stories like that.... a few of the Big Island legislators hold onto apartments here on Oahu and fly back and forth quite often.

And I know even more residents that reside on the Big Island who take the "red eye" flight first flight in the morning daily to work in Downtown Honolulu.

                Craig...SWEET digs bro'.

I'm am really considering buying some land in Puna. When I go there in December I'm gonna look around and see what it's like. I visited the BI a while back, but didn't spend any time in Puna...I pretty much just blazed past it on the way to Volcano and Hilo. This time, I'm going to look.

What subdivisions do you recommend ?

Unfortunately for me, there is no work for someone like me on the BI...otherwise I would seriously consider it as a place to live. I DO want to do a part time residence , and that may be a great place for me to check out.

There are a lot of good subdivisions so I'll tell you the ones I'd stay away from because of the crime and such.

Eden Rock, Hawaiian Beaches, Leilani Estates, Fern Acres, Volcano Village.

If I had to recommend any one subdivision in Puna it would be Hawaiian Paradise Park down by the ocean. It's safe, not too many coquis, dry (not too many mosquito's) and the land values down by the ocean is higher than near Pahoa Highway.

Kaloli Point in HPP is fast becoming the Black Point of the Big Island with mansions coming up there. Further along the beachfront towards Paradise and then Makuu is the pristine and still affordable lots where I feel the next Kahala is going to be.

Best in HPP is anywhere from 10th street down to the ocean from Kaloli Point to Makuu Drive. That is the prime areas in the subdivision.

As I have said before... If your reading this and your local...do what you can and buy now! It will be sold before you have any say in things.

                    Nuff said.

Interesting...I've corresponded with someone in leilani estates who LOVES it....

What are the crux of the crimes in Puna ? Are they ice/drug related ?

                          Nice place, Craig.

Is Billy castrated, or does he pee in his mouth to make himself 'sexy'?

                            Which subdivisions?

As I remember, that would depend on if you want town water or electricity, or not. Or if you prefer pakalolo-growing, pit-bull and booby-trap-raising neighbors or just simple hippie ones. Or if you want a quiet neighborhood with maybe just a few break-ins, or a place so wild that the cops refer to it as 'The Wild West' and hesitate to go in alone.

                            I love that place.
