  • Scanner/printer alarm

I bought a Lexmark (yeah, yeah, but it was about $70) all-in-one scanner/printer/copier X3470 for Christmas last year (so the warranty is out). I had no need to print much this year, so it wasn't till a day or two ago that I needed to change the ink cartridge. Once I did, I got a "Cover Open" alarm. I have been unable to clear it by lifting and putting it down, unplugging/replugging, etc.

I contacted Lexmark and after some trouble finally got a response as follows:
    1. Make sure the printer is in Copy Mode.
    2. Press and hold the Start button and the Power button.
    3. Once the screen will display Mfg Menu Enabled release both buttons.
    4. Press the Mode button 4 times. All of the indicator lights will go out and the screen will display Clean NVRAM.
    5. Press the Start button once.
    6. If the function was sucessful the display would say Clear NVRAM Done.
Well, I could never get the "Mfg Menu Enabled" display. I told Lexmark that and they told me if I could show proof-of-purchase they'd send me a new printer. In a fit of cleanliness I threw out the box which has that info on it, so I couldn't do that, thus no new printer.

There's a site called FixYa which exists for people to post problems in search of solutions, and I tried that. I got a possible answer as follows:
Cover open problem. If you open the cover, at the back of the lid you'll find a ramp-like tab. That tab contacts a poorly designed switch in the base chassis. If you follow down where the tab goes you may find the loose plastic tab or nothing. The tab acts lie a rocker that tells the printer the lid is open for cartridge replacement. if you touch it the cartridge slide will move to the center. To clear the error, you need the cartridge tab compressed. Since you now have a broken two cent tab, you can either buy a new printer or find something to jam down there to hold it closed. Recommend a piece of balled up electrical tape. The tab is pointless and you can change the cartridge without it.
I haven't found that tab, and I don't think much of the electrical tape solution, either.

This scanner is basic xerography hardware, so does anyone know a Xerox or copier tech who might be able advise me how to clear it?

Sounds like you got good advice. You need to figure out how that stupid switch works and fake it out.

The other thing is to make sure it's a "cover open" alarm and not something else. Some units only have an "alarm" light and you have to guess at the problem. Guess wrong, and you'll be going nuts.

We have the same problem with Dell printers, because they are Lexmark makes under the Dell brand. They have weird sensor problems...but they are soooo cheap that they are thrown in for free with a lot of computer purchases.

So, Kittrick, have you figured out a way to resolve it?

Here's some good advice about your printer that seemed to work for someone with the same problem:

          http://www.fixyourownprinter.com/forums/printer/46998

In addition, if this doesn't work, the printers sometimes have a "reset" tab/button hidden inside that technicians only know of and that they are hard to get to. I don't know how much a reset tab/button would work though because it's probably a sensor problem.

Kittrick, if I can't fix it with those instructions, it probably can't be done. Thanks.
