Check MPEG Streamclip. I use it to go the other way...DVD to iMovie...so don't know if it will work for you. I am, afterall, the infamous...ta da...Untechie Tutu!
I have some MP4 videos that I wanna preserve. I don't like iMovie or iDVD for this.

If you just want to archive the video, write it to dvd as a data file. No special software needed. If you want to edit and add effects and graphics, then mpeg streamclip can convert mp4 to AVI or MOV format. Then you can use that in a typical editing program.
Mike, I don't know if this will solve your problem. There is a free utility called "Super C" that will allow you to convert any audio or video format into a different format. In fact, this program will allow you to strip the audio from a flash file and save it in a .wav, .mp3, or any other audio format. The site to download this utility is www.erightsoft.com/SUPER.html.
