Quick question, is anyone excited about the new HD DVD formats? Or is it just much ado about nothing? I have a LG upconvert HDMI DVD player and I can't see the quality of High Def DVD's being much higher. I've read that the Toshiba HD-DVD is basically a computer running Linux and that it takes forever for it to start up and to load disks. All that for copy protection. I really think this will fall on its face. Especially with the format war. Any opinions?

Re: Anyone excited about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?
From everything I've read about the 2 competing formats, its Beta vs. VHS all over again. Frankly I have no intention of buying all the DVDs that I upgraded from Beta and VHS all over again. The only thing I hope is that when one of the formats does settle out and become the dominant, that there will be full backward compatibilty to the DVD format we already have.I'm still here. Are you?

I'm sticking with my DVDs until a bona fide standard is established between
Blue-Ray and HD-DVD. I don't want to be caught in a big "gotcha" just
like Beta vs VHS. Hopefully these new machines will have backwards compatibility with DVDs.Check out my blog on Kona issues :

Re: Anyone excited about Blu-Ray or HD-DVD?
I am not the least bit excited about the new HD formats. The only thing I can forsee myself being excited about is the fact that they can store so much information on them. The thing is, like when Compact Discs came out in the 80s, they cost an arm, leg, ear, nose. Wait a year or two and the technology will be more affordable then. Look at the price of LCD TVs now. Two years ago the cheapest LCD TV was $5000. Now you can get one for less than $500. These high prices and illusions to the "next big thing" are just for early adopters, mainly money-bags. I'll give it time, until then I love my DVDs.

Okay for you multi-format folks out there, Ricoh has developed a 4-way optical drive that can read and write to Blu-Ray, HD-DVD, DVD and CD formats in one drive: http://www.techspot.com/news/22152-r...cal-drive.html
Oh and it ain't gonna be cheap and it's not available for retail yet.Life is what you make of it...so please read the instructions carefully.

I think Blu-Ray or HD-DVD will not take off the way people think it will, the same reason is why BETA never did. If Blu-Ray or HD-DVD want to take off the porn industry will have to be involved. Call me nuts ...but that's why BETA died. Porn is why VHS and DVD became the industry standards.
