Re: FREE Microsoft Vista Beta 2 CDs

I haven't tried it yet. I almost installed it in a computer that I was repairing just to see if it would load. Of course the RAM was bad on that computer so Vista never loaded properly. The welcome screen is really cool though...different from XP.

Well, I just did it. So we shall see. Hope it's better than the Internet Explorer BETA....( I know it's a different type of program!)
I have never had a program freeze so many times in one use! I want to kick my computer!
Can't get the old version back either! So back to Netscape Navigator! It's safer!

Actually I ran into this Catch 22 situation myself. I had re-install Windows XP
to get IE 6 back. Also I'd highly recommend Firefox, instead of Netscape

GREAT That kills me! Maybe I will try Firefox then instead of re-installing! Thanks for the tip.

Since IE components are used by other Windows applications, when I upgraded
to IE7 that software stopped functioning. Then I really hated the new interface.
So I tried to madly revert back to IE6. None of the tips I found to do it would work (Evidently there is an entry in add/remove applet in control panel to uninstall IE7 and go back to IE6). But that entry did not exist on my computer.

So I ran out of options and installed a clean copy of XP- it solved the problem.
Firefox is highly recommended by me by the way.

Re: FREE Microsoft Vista Beta 2 CDs

We've had several threads devoted to the wonder of Firefox. Perhaps this one could be revived with additional Firefox updates and tips.

As for Vista... I got to play with an install as part of a computer class I took a few months ago. Apart from realizing how much space it required and how long it took to install, the UI changes were almost funny to me. They seemed to adopt bits and pieces of both Mac and Linux GUIs, but didn't make anything that much more intuitive, and in some cases, made finding things worse.

The fact that there are already tested exploits circumventing its "next generation" security features is also a bit worrisome. That's the downside of a "beta" period that drags on and on and on...

                              Microsoft Vista

Microsoft said Wednesday that it plans to clamp down hard on piraters of its next-generation operating systems, crippling both Windows Vista and Windows Server "Longhorn" if users fail to activate their copies within 30 days.

"Software piracy is not a victimless crime," she said. "It harms consumers, businesses and other organizations every year."
                              Source

So, I'm guessing that I'll have to buy one disc for every computer to install vista on? (one box = one license)

If that's the case, then if if the cheapest version will cost $100, and I want to get two of the ultimate versions for $200 each (figuratively speaking) then I'll have to spend $700! I can buy a new computer with that!

(of course, 4 of the computers came with XP already installed, and I had to install everything on my SFF computer)

                              Good bye Windows. Hello Linux.
How'd I get so white and nerdy?

I assume you haven't been buying one license per computer build? As it is one license of XP Home can run about $92 including shipping, so buying Vista at $100 is a good deal considering XP Pro is over a Hundred dollars as we speak.

Oh the virtues of a corporate licensed version of XP Pro w/SP 2 on CD

Got XP PRO Corp on disk?

BTW yesterday Microsoft just sent me another three copies of Vista Release Candidate 1 on DVD. That makes six I have in my possession at this moment. I don't have enough machines to put them all on! Anyone need one?
