Perhaps the obvious is not to get one in the first place.
But if you do, I've found out, that it's better just to back your data up, and reinstall your OS from scratch, then the supporting applications, and finally your data.
Lots of time can be saved, than troubleshooting.
However, if you're that geek that really needs to get in there and clean stuff up...Here is my recipe for success. Fixed 500+ computers with this..
----------------------------------
Before you do anything BACKUP your systems' Registry & Application Data. (This is assuming you have ALL your applications install discs). In addition, applying the following "could" render your OS inoperable. However, out of the above 500+ fixes...only 2 were trashed via the solution below. Sometimes God cannot resurrect the truly dead.
Download and install HIJACK THIS;
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=3155
Run the scan and create the log. Visit the Analyze log site and either upload or copy and paste your results. Here is the Analyze site;
http://www.hijackthis.de/
Click Analyze. The results will be displayed. What you need to do is go in and remove the "NASTY" marked items...and review the "POSSIBLE NASTY".
Reboot your system and reapply the above 1 more time. If your system doesn't display any nasties at all, you're in good shape. If you still have a persistent problem...then do the following...
Dowload and install EWIDO.... Visit the site;
http://www.ewido.net/en/download/ and get the AVG
Install and download the updates....Scan your system.
Ultimately, if the above doesn't work. You can apply the following IF you have another working computer that is known to be FREE of viruses or spyware. (Make sure the updates are on this system)
Install / attach the infected hardrive as a Slave to the Master, OR Master on the Secondary IDE Controller. Use your Anti-Virus program & Anti-Spyware program to scan and delete infected files. Return the drive to the original system.
Does it boot up??? Good, Reapply Hijack & Ewido to confirm that you are free of infection

Should the above work out for you...that is $250 worth of free advice as that is the Fee that I charge for repairing an infected system.
An O/S reinstall is $150 flat.
