Re: Cokie Roberts thinks we're all furriners here

I briefly thought the same thing, though the "attempted takeover" was so goofy, it's hard to not want to keep it as a wholly separate farce.

However, I did think Cokie would've gotten a boost from the stories in the local media on Friday about how the "commemoration" (and not "celebration") of Statehood Day were to be "sensitive."

A curiosity question...if you were asked to pronounce/spell "haole" phonetically for a predominately non-Hawaii readership, how would you pronounce/spell it? I probably would have omitted the first "l".

              Probably "how-leh."

That makes sense! Still, I hear it pronounced "how-lee" much more than "how-leh". Doesn't make it right; just an observation!

Thank goodness I had basic Hawaiian language in elementary school.

                  Lucky I live in Hawaii!

Article tells you how to pronounce "haole" but not "pake." Wonder how many 48ers think it's pronounced like "bake."

BTW, Pake Zane is a prince among men.

My family cringes every time they hear "My-lay" Beach.
We all know it is My-Lee!

A few years ago I heard some tourists talk about driving on kommie-hommie-ha highway.
                              .
                              .

That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

I'm outed!! I am sorry, I am sorry, I am very, very sorry.

I wasn't a "toureest," but I have to say I was guilty of that very thing; DH was kind enough to correct me before I showed my ignorance to the world.

You know, when you are learning about the state of Hawaii and living somewhere else, those things are not enunciated; I distinctly remember trying to say Lilioukalani out loud in high school. And that pronunciation of Kamehameha was definitely used!
